HAMMOND — In a rematch of the Class C state championship game from a year ago, Summerfield High School defeated Pleasant Hill, 59-34, to capture the 2016 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class C girls basketball state championship Friday afternoon at the University Center in Hammond.
Summerfield (30-1) repeats as Class C state champions while Pleasant Hill finishes the season 28-12.
Most Outstanding Player of the game, Summerfield’s Nicole Bursey led Summerfield with 27 points. Ayana Smith led Pleasant Hill with 14 points and Samiah Scott had 14.
Never trailing in the game, the Rebels broke out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter. Holding Pleasant Hill to a single field goal in the first quarter, Summerfield’s lead grew to 16-7 early in the second quarter. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 16-13 with 3:34 in the second quarter, but Summerfield scored the final four points of the half to lead 20-13.
