The Greater New Orleans area began with 30 teams in the LHSAA baseball playoffs.
Half of those teams are still around after the first round, including at least one school in the five largest classifications.
Six schools in Class 5A are still playing, including three from the Catholic League.
Brother Martin, Jesuit, and Rummel all advanced from District 9-5A, which went 3-1 in the first round.
John Curtis, which won the Catholic League, lost to Chalmette in the first round.
In addition to the three Catholic League teams and Chalmette, Destrehan and Hahnville are also still playing in 5A.
Pearl River, Franklinton and Salmen all remain in Class 4A.
Lutcher is the only local 3A team that advanced past the first round, beating Albany.
Northlake Christian, St. Charles, Riverside and Newman all advanced from 2A.
Clas 1A St. Martin advanced Wednesday night.
Cox football penalized
The Helen Cox football was penalized by the LHSAA for violation of rules pertaining to practicing in the offseason.
The Cougars, under first-year coach Skip Lamothe, are now limited to having just five spring practies.
The school was also issued a $200 fine.
Softball games to be on TV
The Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Fast Pitch 56 begins Friday in Sulphur, with the championship games being played on Saturday.
All seven state championship games will be broadcast live.

The Class 4A and 5A title games will be shown live on Fox Sports New Orleans Plus. Coverage will start at 5 p.m. with Class 4A, followed by Class 5A beginning at 7 p.m. Both telecasts are also available on Fox Sports Go, the network’s mobile streaming app
Three area teams — Cabrini in 4A, Lutcher in 3A and Hannan in 2A — made this year’s tournament and will play in the quarterfinals Friday.
Puntila new Hannan coach
Austin Puntila was named new girls basketball coach at Archbishop Hannan, Athletic Director Joe Hines said.
