As more Louisiana high-school football coaches add to their totals of 200 or more wins, an obvious question emerges.

Could the current 200 wins list become a 300 wins list someday?

Coaches like Catholic High’s Dale Weiner and Don Jones don’t have the answer. What they do have is the desire to continue doing what they’re doing.

“This will be my 37th year,” Weiner said. “And to be honest with you, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t coaching.”

Weiner, who has a career record of 268-89 in 30 seasons as a head coach, tops the list of active local coaches on Louisiana’s all-time wins list. Weiner ranks 11th on the list that is topped by John Curtis Christian’s J.T. Curtis at 492-54-6.

Until a few years ago, Curtis, former Haynesville coach Alton “Red” Franklin (366-76-8) and the late Racer Holstead (310-155) were the only 300 wins coaches.

However, St. Thomas More-Lafayette’s Jim Hightower (338-106-1) now ranks third, followed by West Monroe’s Don Shows (321-73). Oak Grove’s Vic Dalrymple (308-87) joined the 300-wins club last season.

The retirement of Dutton Wall from Sacred Heart-Ville Platte leaves Weiner as the winningest active coach, just one game ahead of Notre Dame-Crowley’s Lewis Cook (267-70).

The 200-wins group welcomed one new member last year. Westlake’s Max Caldarera enters 2011 with a 203-160 record.

Jones enters the season at (226-137-3). And like Weiner, Jones said football continues to be his passion.

“I know I’m fortunate to still be able to do the thing I love,” Jones said. “I still have the energy to get out there and line the field and whatever else is needed.”

Jones’ current total pushed him one game ahead of former Capitol coach Roman Bates (225-158-6). Another coach who is joining a local league, Lutcher High’s Tim Detillier (219-97), is advancing on the list.

The two other active coaches who are the closest to Weiner and Cook also have local ties. Beau Chene’s James Waguespack (235-151-0) started his career at St. James, while Larry Dauterive (227-76-1), most recently at East St. John, was once the head coach at East Ascension. In 2011, Dauterive is beginning a second stint at Opelousas High.

This year’s list also includes a coach who moved back into the active ranks. Hank Tierney (221-75) served as an assistant coach in recent years and is now head coach at Ponchatoula High. Tierney previously made his mark at Archbishop Shaw and East Jefferson.

A mention of the 200 wins list would not be complete without including Kentwood’s David Currier (224-78) and Vandebilt Catholic’s Laury Dupont (222-95), who rank just ahead of Ponchatoula’s Tierney.

Weiner and Jones understand the different challenges coaches face today.

“You have some great coaches,” Weiner said. “You look at J.T. and he’s going to be the national leader for wins. He’s on another level.

“There are a lot of coaches out there who are dedicated and love what they do. But you don’t have as many coaches who stay in it. There are a lot of reasons for that. The thing that’s made a big difference for me is the people I’ve been around, the players, administrations and assistant coaches.”

Woodlawn’s Jones’ agrees.

“I know I’m fortunate to still be a head coach,” Jones said. “All the parents, players and coaches at each place I’ve been made it possible.”
