Archbishop Chapelle, a No. 22 seed, made a four-run lead hold up Tuesday, holding off No. 11 Dutchtown for a 4-3 victory in the bidistrict round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Chipmunks (19-8) host No. 27 Alexandria in regional competition later this week.
“For the last three years I kept saying we were a young team and now we’re getting a little more mature,” Chapelle coach Wendy Zucconi said. “They’ve worked hard. Our hits are coming around the defense is getting pretty solid. Everything’s falling into place.”
Winning pitcher Samantha Mracich (17-7) allowed five hits, three runs (two earned), walked two and struck out three.
Mracich, the team’s lead-off batter, triggered a 15-hit output with a 3-for-5 performance along with catcher Randi DeArmitt (3-for-5, double), first baseman Kelsey Conley (2-for-4) and left fielder Natalie Romano (2-for-5, RBI, double).
Chapelle opened a 4-0 lead through four innings, scoring once in the first, twice more in the third and once more in the fourth.
