LAKE CHARLES (AP)—North Central captured the school’s first-ever basketball state championship with a 54-50 victory over Vermilion Catholic in the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 1A State Championship Saturday afternoon in Lake Charles.

The top-seeded team in Class 1A, North Central (27-3) was led by Sydney Martin’s game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jazlyn Robertson also had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Quaniqua Joseph added 14 points and six rebounds.

North Central held a 40-38 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The teams would trade buckets throughout the final eight minutes with neither holding more than a three-point lead.

Tied 50-50, Robertson’s bucket with 1:16 gave the Lady Canes a 52-50 advantage. Joseph would add a pair of free throws with 26.8 seconds left to put the game out of reach at 54-50.

A back-and-forth game of runs, North Central led for a majority of the first half. Falling behind in the third quarter after a 12-1 Vermilion Catholic run, the Lady Canes ended the quarter on an 11-0 run of their own to take a 40-36 lead into the final quarter.

Finishing the season 26-5, Vermilion Catholic was led by Kaylen Collins’ 16 points and 15 rebounds. Ashailee Brailey also had 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with eight assists.
