Advocate file photo St. Scholastica's Samantha Zelden finished first in the javelin in an AAU Junior Olympics in the summer of 2014. Zelden kicks off her season as she and other area athletes compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic on Friday and Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.

Zelden, a junior, was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic after winning the javelin.

She won with a throw of 145-feet, 3-inches and was 10 inches shy of the meet record of 146-1, set in 2014 by Ruston’s Kristen Clark.

“Overall, I’m pretty pleased with my performance,” Zelden said.

Zelden set the LHSAA state meet record in May with a throw of 146 feet.
