No local team claimed a top seed but two, Division I powers St. Amant and St. Joseph’s Academy, get prime-time billing when the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State volleyball tournament begins Thursday in Kenner.

Third-seeded St. Joseph’s (29-11) faces No. 6 Chapelle (22-16) in a Division I quarterfinal set for 6:10 p.m. Thursday at Kenner’s Pontchartrain Center. Fifth-seeded St. Amant (27-13) meets No. 4 Barbe (30-10) at 8 p.m.

SJA was the Division I runner-up last season and won the title in 2013. St. Amant was a semifinalist a year ago.

Quarterfinals start at 9 a.m. Thursday for the three-day tournament that runs through Saturday.

Second-second Lutcher (32-6) plays No. 7 Vandebilt Catholic (23-15) in a Division III quarterfinal set for 2:30 p.m. At 4:20 p.m., fourth-seeded Central (37-6) makes its first tourney appearance since 2010. The Wildcats face No. 5 Belle Chasse (36-6).

Eighth-seeded Parkview Baptist (24-16) plays top-seeded Teurlings Catholic (29-8) at 12:40 p.m. No. 7 Episcopal (27-10) meets No. 2 Hannan (34-7) in a Division IV quarterfinal also set for 12:40 p.m.

The area’s two Division V teams, No. 4 Ascension Catholic (30-10) and No. 9 Catholic-PC (21-19), play their quarterfinals in the morning. ACHS faces No. 5 Houma Christian (24-13) at 9 a.m., while CHSPC takes on top-seeded McGehee (39-4) at 10:50 a.m.

Signing time

Catholic High swimmer Colin Bone and two softball players, East Ascension’s Claire Weinberger and St. Amant’s Kourtney Gremillion, help lead the list of athletes set to sign with colleges as the NCAA’s early signing period begins on Wednesday.

Bone is scheduled to sign with Auburn at 12:15 p.m. in the Alumni House at the school.

Weinberger, an infielder, is scheduled to sign with LSU at 6 p.m. at the school. Gremillion, also an infielder, is set to sign with Louisiana-Lafayette.

St. Michael the Archangel girls basketball standouts Tyler Morrison (Southeastern Louisiana University) and Sabree Wilson (Nicholls State) are scheduled to sign at 10:15 a.m. Nicholls is set to pick up another girls basketball signee in Walker’s Keona Brown, who has a 2 p.m. ceremony planned at her school.

St. Amant baseball player Adam Sevario is set to sign with Florida International during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s auxillary gym.

East Ascension softball players, Jessie Watts (Louisiana- Monroe) and Verlencia Jackson (Mississippi Valley) are scheduled to sign at the same time as Weinberger.

Central softball player Bayleigh Anders (Spring Hill) has a 1:30 p.m. signing ceremony scheduled in the school’s library.

Jones nets offer

Madison Prep defensive lineman Brian Jones got his first major scholarship offer from North Carolina State on Monday.

The 6-foot-6 Jones helps lead the unbeaten Chargers (10-0) into Friday’s Division III playoff game with Hannan (7-3) at Glen Oaks.
