Player to watch

DT Dexter James

Season stats: 21 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 pass deflections, 1 INT

Over the past month, James, a fifth-year senior, has emerged as the type of defensive force coaches always thought he could be. His presence along the interior is even more important. Southern was already thin on the defensive line, but the team will probably face UAPB without tackle Traé Tiller and end Jeffrey Watkins, who suffered ankle injuries last week. What’s more, Southern’s defense has struggled against teams with a hard-nosed, straight-ahead rushing attack. The Jaguars will need James and his teammates to hold their own against UAPB.

Player to watch

RB Adrian Moore

Season stats: 74 rushes, 483 yards; 15 receptions, 145 yards; 6 kickoff returns, 201 yards

A native of Pine Bluff, Ark., who transferred from the University of Arkansas, Moore has developed into one of the best running backs in the SWAC. He leads the league in rushing yards and gives UAPB the kind of bruising, physical attack coach Monte Coleman loves. Moore’s presence has been all the more important as the Golden Lions break in a new starting quarterback in redshirt freshman Ben Anderson. UAPB started slowly on offense but has made strides lately; the Lions rank fourth in the conference in total offense, and over their past five games, they’ve averaged 172.6 rushing yards.
