Yes, it’s championship season for the LHSAA. The Allstate Sugar Bowl/Fast Pitch 56 state softball tournament is the high profile event this week, but there also is plenty of action in several other sports.

And it starts Sunday when the LHSAA releases its playoff pairings in all seven classes for baseball.

The state tennis tournament in Monroe, state gymnastics meet at Baton Rouge High and regional competition for track and field and golf make this one of the busiest weeks of the year. Here is a breakdown:

BASEBALL: Pairings should be released in the afternoon and teams in Classes 5A to 2A are scheduled to play their first-round games before Wednesday. The regional deadline is Saturday. Classes 1A-C have until Wednesday to play their first-round games.

SOFTBALL: It’ll be all about Class 5A, two 3A rivals, two 1A teams and three Livingston Parish teams some fans may not be familiar with.

Three teams from District 4-5A are part of the 5A quarterfinals set for Friday in Sulphur, starting at 10 a.m. Second-seeded Zachary, No. 5 Live Oak and eighth-seeded Central all advanced along with No. 7 St. Amant of 5-5A.

Top-seeded Parkview Baptist and No. 6 Brusly are the 3A teams that are Sulphur bound. Ditto that for 1A Ascension Catholic, a No. 4 seed, and No. 8 Catholic-Pointe Coupee in 1A.

Joining Livingston-based Live Oak are three other parish teams — 2A Doyle, Class B Holden and Class C Maurepas.
