East Ascension High School hired assistant coach Britt Waguespack as its new head baseball coach.

Waguespack, an assistant football and baseball coach at EAHS, replaces Mike Toups, who resigned last month.

The 30-year-old Waguespack is a former Riverside Academy player and coach. He has coached at EAHS for a total of seven seasons and is in his second stint at the school. Waguespack also spent two seasons as head baseball coach/assistant football coach at Riverside.

“I worked with Jamie Morgan for two years, Wayne Grenfell for one year and Mike Toups for the last three,” Waguespack said Monday. “So there’s no way I’m coming in thinking I’m the best coach the school has ever had. East Ascension is the same great school it has always been. We have wonderful kids and great parents. What I want to see is for all that to come together in a big way.”

Waguespack graduated from Riverside in 2002. He played football and baseball for the Rebels. After playing baseball for two seasons at Laredo (Texas) Junior College, he returned to Louisiana and was a student football coach at St. Charles Catholic.

EAHS Athletic Director Paul Bourgeois said Waguespack emerged as the frontrunner in recent weeks.

“We did some interviews, but Britt’s name kept coming up,” Bourgeois said. “What we had to decide was this (Waguespack’s) time? And we decided it was.”

Bourgeois said Waguespack will continue to be the defensive coordinator on his football staff while also picking up the head baseball duties.

“His plate is going to be real full,” Bourgeois said.
