Basketball season won’t take center stage on the high school scene for a few more weeks, but Thursday is a good time to a get sneak peek at some of the area’s top teams and players.

McKinley, Tara, Port Allen, White Castle, Walker and St. Amant are among the schools hosting jamboree contests Thursday, four days before the official start of the season for schools in Classes 5A to 1A.

The McKinley Jamboree and Tara Jamboree feature many of the area’s top boys teams.

Madison Prep, last year’s 1A runner-up, plays Donaldsonville at 7:30 p.m. at McKinley. The host Panthers take on Southern Lab at 8:30 p.m.

Boys action at the Tara Jamboree begins at 5 p.m. with Baker vs. Belaire. Scotlandville, last year’s 5A runner-up, plays St. Michael at 8 p.m.

St. Amant, Port Allen, Walker and White Castle host jamborees that feature boys and girls teams.

Games at Port Allen begin at 5:30 p.m. with a boys game that features Catholic-Pointe Coupee and Lee. Seven games are scheduled. The mix of girls and boys games at St. Amant starts at 4 p.m. with Springfield facing Lakeshore in a girls game.

Action also begins at 4 p.m. at Walker with a boys game between Denham Springs and Parkview Baptist. The Walker girls, a playoff quarterfinalist last season, face Loranger at 7 p.m. The White Castle Jamboree starts with the East Iberville girls taking on the Plaquemine JV at 4:30 p.m.
