The Buzz: The Raiders are ranked No. 1 in Super 10 and LSWA Class 5A polls and also ranked No. 11 nationally by USA Today. Rummel is on a 14-game winning streak dating to last season. Raiders also have won 14 consecutive games against the Tigers and 21 of past 22. The defense, led by DL Tyrell Jacobs and Briston Guidry, kept Jesuit’s high-powered offense in check last week. QB Chase Fourcade runs the offense. QB Kyle Hunter has filled in admirably for injured Kyle Schexnayder, leading Tigers to their first district win last week. Mississippi State commitment Tre Turner leads the ground game with 669 yards and seven TDs, while Georgia commitment Michael Chigbu (509 yards, 4 TDs) is top receiver.

District 6-5A

Hammond (1-7, 0-5)

at Covington (4-4, 3-2)

Last week: Covington lost to St. Paul’s 27-10. Hammond lost to Northshore 48-45, in overtime.

Last year: Covington won 27-7.

The Buzz: Covington’s Tyler Evans returned a blocked field goal 102 yards for a touchdown last week. Ian Connelly added a 24-yard field goal. Hammond led 28-0 before Northshore rallied. Tors QB Blaise Schillace has passed for 834 yards this season.

Fontainebleau (4-4, 2-3)

at Slidell (4-4, 1-4)

Last week: Fontainebleau lost to Ponchatoula 41-21; Slidell lost to Mandeville 20-0.

Last year: Slidell won 37-13.

The Buzz: Fontainebleau WR Hunter Bastion has caught 49 passes for 778 yards and five touchdowns. Slidell was held to 85 yards last week. Leading rusher Kain Mitchell was held to 22 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Mandeville (5-3, 4-1)

at Northshore (3-5, 1-4)

Last week: Mandeville beat Slidell 20-0; Northshore beat Hammond 48-45.

Last year: Mandeville won 38-17.

The Buzz: Mandeville moved into The Advocate’s Large Schools Super 10 at the No. 10 spot. The Skippers have won four in a row. Northshore trailed 28-0 before rallying to force the game into overtime and win. WR Jaime Yepez scored five touchdowns in the comeback.

St. Paul’s (6-2, 4-1)

at Ponchatoula (8-0, 5-0)

Last week: St. Paul’s beat Covington 27-10; Ponchatoula beat Fontainebleau 41-21.

Last year: St. Paul’s won 24-21.

The Buzz: Ponchatoula remains No. 3 in the Class 5A poll. St. Paul’s received four votes but is not in the Top 10. St. Paul’s junior Dominic Davenport had 138 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries last week.

District 7-5A

Terrebonne (2-6, 0-5)

at East St. John (4-4, 3-2)

Last week: Terrebonne lost to Central Lafourche 42-28; East St. John lost to Thibodaux 35-21.

Last year: East St. John won 49-21.

The Buzz: Terrebonne has lost five games in a row. Its last victory was on Sept. 20, a 44-28 win over Ellender. East St. John was held to 254 yards by Thibodaux. QB Xavier Lewis, an LSU commitment and the Wildcats leader, had 13 carries for 47 yards and a TD. He was 6 of 15 passing for 142 yards and another score.

Destrehan (8-0, 5-0)

at H.L. Bourgeois (1-7, 0-5)

Last week: Destrehan beat South Lafourche 55-0; H.L. Bourgeois lost to Hahnville 58-8.

Last year: Destrehan won 63-8.

The Buzz: Destrehan remains at No 2 in both the Class 5A state poll and The Advocate’s Large Schools Super 10. Last week’s win was Destrehan’s first shutout of the season and it first since last year’s 44-0 bi-district win over Terrebonne.

Central Lafourche (4-4, 2-3)

at Hahnville (5-3, 3-2)

Last week: Hahnville beat H.L. Bourgeois 58-8; Central Lafourche beat Terrebonne 42-28.

Last year: Central Lafourche won 20-17.

The Buzz: Hahnville is ranked No. 8 in The Advocate’s Large Schools Super 10. Central Lafourche snapped a three-game losing streak last week. Hahnville has scored 50 or more points against twice this season — both against Terrebonne Parish opponents.

District 8-5A

Bonnabel (2-6, 1-2)

at Chalmette (3-5, 2-1)

Last week: Bonnabel beat Higgins 31-7; Chalmette beat West Jefferson 35-14.

Last year: Bonnabel won 28-18.

The Buzz: Maurice Britton (551 rushing yards) and Semaj Franklin (540 yards) give the Bruins a solid 1-2 punch in the backfield. Franklin has also thrown for 628 yards. Chalmette has a strong running game of its own with Jayvon Lewis 619 yards, 7 TDs) and Masen Mitchell (500 yards, 6 TDs). DT Jalin Scott clogs up the middle for the Owls.

Higgins (2-6, 1-2)

at Ehret (7-1, 3-0)

Last week: Higgins lost to Bonnabel 31-7; Ehret beat Helen Cox 61-0.

Last year: Ehret won 49-6.

The Buzz: Ehret has given up just 80 points all season, and almost half of that came in the team’s 33-24 loss to Brother Martin. Michael Divinity and Rajon Harris lead a rock solid defense. The offense is led by QB Caron Baham, who has rushed for 1,061 yards and 17 TDs. Higgins has scored just 20 points in its last two games and looking to get back on track. Daniel White has thrown for 1,376 yards and 12 TDS and hads dangerous WRs in Romalo Ford (448 yards, 5 TDS) and Melvin Frazier (380 yards, 3 TDs).

District 9-4A

Easton (7-1, 2-0)

at Landry-Walker (7-1, 3-0),

Last week: Easton beat Miller-McCoy 40-14; Landry-Walker beat McDonogh (35) 23-13

Last year: Landry-Walker won 13-12

The Buzz: Highly anticipated showdown between Easton’s high-octane offense and Landry-Walker’s defense. Winner likely wins district title. Charging Bucs ranked No. 3 in both Super 10 and LSWA Class 4A polls. Eagles are No. 4 in Super 10 and fifth in 4A.

Deshawn Capers-Smith is state’s top passer with 2,469 passing yards and 31 TDs. WR Tyron Johnson (1,012 yards), Clyde Chriss (646 yards) and Darrel Clark (566 yards) lead a slew of weapons. Landry-Walker counters with QBs Keytaon Thompson and Li Jon Cordier. Tirell Gilmore and Michael Lee head up a Charging Bucs’ defense.

District 8-4A

Franklinton (7-1, 3-0)

at East Jefferson (5-3, 3-0), Yenni

Last week: Franklinton beat Lakeshore 56-14; East Jefferson beat Salmen 23-15.

Last year: East Jefferson won 17-8.

The Buzz: Franklinton is ranked No. 7 in the Super 10 and No. 6 in Class 4A. Warriors have won three straight after starting season 2-3; DB Deshawn Raymond leads the EJ defense. Michael Wilson leads Franklinton’s offense, having thrown for 1,074 yards. Azende Magee heads up the Demons ground game with 865 rushing yards.

District 11-3A

Lusher (4-4, 0-2)

at St. Charles (6-2, 2-1)

Last week: Lusher lost to John Curtis 48-14; St. Charles beat McMain 49-14.

Last year: St. Charles won 50-6.

The Buzz: St. Charles is ranked No. 3 in the Super 10 and No. 4 in Class 3A. RB Erron Lewis looked to be back healthy after rushing for four TDs last week. Lions have lost two straight and scoring 13.5 points in those two games after scoring 30 or more in five of its previous six games. Joshua Barney has rushed for 911 yards and 11 TDs for the Lions.

District 7-2A

Hannan (1-7, 1-4)

at St. Helena (1-7, 1-3)

Last week: Hannan lost to Northlake Christian 33-15; St. Helena lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 45-20

Last year: Hannan won 43-0

The Buzz: Hannan trying to snap three-game skid. It’s the final game of the regular season for the Hawks. Ryan Hensarling’s 300 yards on the ground lead Hannan. Jonathan Ryan has thrown for 802 yards and seven TDs, while Griffin Hakenjos anchors the defense with a team-best 65 tackles.

Pope John Paul II (1-7, 0-4)

at Springfield (6-1, 3-1)

Last week: Pope John Paul II lost to DeLaSalle 51-0; Springfield beat Pine 38-36.

Last year: Springfield won 28-9.

The Buzz: Jags’ only win of the season was a forfeit victory over Pearl River. Chance Caire has rushed for 757 yards and five TDs and Connor Maples has rushed for 354 yards. Springfield has scored 79 points the last two weeks.

Northlake Christian (7-1, 3-1)

vs. Pine (4-3, 2-2)

Last week: Northlake beat Hannan 33-15; Pine lost to Springfield 38-36.

Last year: Northlake Christian won 48-44

The Buzz: Northlake is ranked No. 7 in the Small School Super 10 and No. 9 in the LSWA Class 2A polls. Raiders are led by QB Derrick Dillon, who has committed to Florida. Northlake counters with RB Miguel Black, who took over the top spot in rushing in the Greater New Orleans area this week. Black has rushed 161 times for 1,300 yards and 16 TDs. Qb Matt Whelan has thrown for 463 yards.

District 8-2A

Cohen (0-8, 0-5)

at Newman (7-1, 4-1)

Last week: Cohen lost to Carver 40-0. Newman beat Fisher 59-13.

Last year: Newman won 55-0.

The Buzz: Newman is ranked No. 7 in Class 2A and No. 4 in The Advocate’s Small Schools Super 10. The Greenies are averaging 44 points per game. Kendall Bussey set a season record for touchdowns with his 27th, breaking the record of 26 set by Justin Seale in 1998.

South Plaquemines (3-5, 3-2)

at Fisher (1-6, 1-4)

Last week: South Plaquemines lost to Riverside 40-0. Fisher lost to Newman 59-13.

Last year: South Plaquemines won 43-0.

The Buzz: Fisher actually has two “wins” this season. The Gators can claim a 32-22 victory against Sci Academy, which is not playing an official schedule this year. South Plaqumines scored 148 points in its first three district wins, but has been outscored 60-12 in its last two games, which were losses.

Sophie B. Wright (2-6, 1-4)

at Riverside (8-0, 5-0)

Last week: Riverside beat South Plaquemines 40-0; Sophie B. Wright lost to St. James 56-12.

Last year: Riverside won 62-7.

The Buzz: Riverside is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A and No. 2 in The Advocate’s Small Schools Super 10. The Rebels are averaging 51 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 13. Sophie B. Wright is led by QB Derek Robinson.

St. James (4-4, 3-2)

at Carver (3-4, 3-2)

Last week: St. James beat Sophie B. Wright 56-12; Carver beat Cohen 40-0.

Last year: Carver won 20-12.

The Buzz: Both teams are looking to extend their win streak to three games for the first time this season. For the Wildcats, it would be the first time since the 2010 season.

District 9-1A

Covenant Christian (5-3, 3-1)

at Ridgewood (1-6, 1-3)

Last week: Covenant Christian lost to Country Day 35-14; Ridgewood lost to Houma Christian 47-16.

Last year: Covenant Christian won 53-0.

The Buzz: Ridgewood’s only victory this season was 40-21 win over winless Ecole Classique. Eagles scored 40 points in that game and have scored just 49 in the other six. Covenant Christian had its three-game winning streak snapped last week by Country Day. District 8-1A

West St. John (6-2, 3-0)

at St. John (1-7, 1-2)

Last week: West St. John beat Ascension Catholic 32-27; St. John lost to East Iberville 54-6.

Last year: West St. John won 56-10.

The Buzz: West St. John is ranked No. 5 in Class 1A and in The Advocate’s Small Schools Super 10. It has won 20 consecutive district games. The Rams are averaging 38 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 19.

Nondistrict

Clark (1-7) at Sci Academy

Last year: Did not play.

The Buzz: Bulldogs looking to end a four-game losing streak after lone win, a 10-3 victory over Ben Franklin in Week 4. Clark has scored more than one touchdown in just one game this season (47-21 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas). Davon Raymond had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week.

Country Day (7-1)

at Central Catholic (6-2)

Last week: Country Day beat Covenant Christian 35-14; Central Catholic beat Lafayette Christian 17-7.

Last year: Country Day won 41-7.

The Buzz: Cajuns have won five straight and haven’t given up more than two touchdowns in any game. Jase Griffin is closing in on the 1,000 yard mark (909 yards, 18 TDs). WR Trey Harrel leads the metro area in yards per catch (30.1) and has 601 receiving yards this season.
