Sophomore Mackenzie Manuel scored three goals to lead Mandeville to an easy 6-0 victory over visiting Zachary in the first round of the Division I playoffs.
Manuel’s third goal of the match was her 50th of the season.
She scored 59 goals as a freshman.
“She works all the time and is always trying to improve,” Mandeville coach Sean Esker said.
“She will leave tonight having scored three goals in a playoff game and will say what can I do next? She’ll go home and work some more.”
Senior Kimberly Boudreaux scored two goals and sophomore Danielle Tyler scored the other goal for the Skippers (26-5).
“I like that we scored in the first 10 minutes,” Esker said. “It put them under some pressure. They barely crossed midfield in the first half, and that showed that we were willing to put the pressure on them. Anytime you get a shutout in the playoffs, that’s a positive thing.”
Mandeville, which reached the quarterfinals last season, advances to the regional round to play the winner of Friday’s match between Thibodaux and Comeaux.
Country Day 2, Episcopal 1: Lucy Butterbaugh scored both goals, including what proved to be the game-winner in the second half as the No. 17-seeded Cajuns beat host Episcopal in the Division III playoffs. The teams played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season.
“We played really well and are peaking at the right time,” said Country Day coach Glenn Benjamin.
Country Day will host the winner of Friday’s match between No. 32 seed Evangel Christian and top-seed Northlake Christian.
Country Day and Northlake Christian played to a 1-1 tie earlier this season.
Lakeshore 9, Ellender 0: Lakeshore had little trouble winning its opening round game in the Division II playoffs.
The Titans, a No. 5 seed, advance to the regional round to play the Ursuline-Benton winner.
Ursuline and Benton play at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Audubon Riverview.
Dominican 4, St. Amant 0: Dominican blanked visiting St. Amant in opening-round action of the Division I playoffs and will play the winner of Thursday’s Denham Springs- Sulphur match.
