Dutchtown, Amite and University held steady with their Top 3 rankings in their respective classes, while Lutcher and Episcopal both moved up a spot in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association polls.

The top teams in each of the five classifications all sport 7-0 records and remained the same.

St. Paul’s of Covington sits atop Class 5A, St. Thomas More leads 4A, St. Charles Catholic leads 3A, John Curtis leads 2A and Ouachita Christian leads 1A.

Dutchtown (7-0, 2-0 in District 5-5A) is second in Class 5A, earning one first-place vote and 130 points. St. Paul’s received 11 first-place votes and 143 points. Carencro (7-0) is ranked third again, while Jesuit (7-0) moved up a spot to fifth.

Dutchtown rallied for a 35-25 victory over East Ascension last week as Landon Collins rushed for four second-half touchdowns after sitting out the first half. Dutchtown entertains Woodlawn (3-4, 1-1 in District 5-5A). Both teams have scored over 30 points in six games. The Panthers have allowed six opponents to score more than 30 points.

Lutcher (6-1, 4-0 in District 6-4A) moved up a spot to fourth in Class 4A after defeating St. Michael the Archangel 45-7 last week.

St. Michael (6-1, 2-1) dropped out of the Top 10 and earned 19 points in the latest poll.

Amite (6-1) is third in Class 3A, while Independence (5-2) moved up a spot to sixth. Livonia (6-1) dropped two spots to seventh and Parkview Baptist (4-3) dropped a spot to 10th.

Winnfield (7-0) is second in Class 2A.

University (7-0, 2-0 in District 7-2A) remains third in Class 2A, while Episcopal (6-1, 1-1) moved up a spot to sixth.

After University’s 21-17 victory over EHS two weeks ago, both teams had monster offensive games last week as University routed Capitol 42-0 and Episcopal defeated Redemptorist 55-33.

“We ran the ball well again, and we completed all nine pass attempts,” University coach Chad Mahaffey said.?

Nick Brossette scored three of his four touchdowns in the first quarter. The Cubs had 236 yards rushing and 138 passing. It was the second shutout of the season and fourth time the Cubs have held their opponent to 6 or fewer points.

“We have a very close team with 19 seniors,” Mahaffey said. “We can’t control the teams ahead of us in the poll. We’ve got to keep playing well and play for the highest seed possible. We’re getting better each week.”

University plays at Dunham (4-3, 2-0) Friday.

“Dunham has improved a lot the last few weeks and it’ll be a battle of 2-0 teams,” Mahaffey said.

Episcopal travels to Northeast (2-5, 0-2) and EHS coach Travis Bourgeois said the stats he was most impressed with after the comeback victory over Redemptortist were 27 first downs and no turnovers.

The Knights rushed for 370 yards, passed for 121 and punted once.

“We put it together offensively,” Bourgeois said. “We’re still making mistakes on defense and can improve in all three phases of our game. Our senior Mike Henry is a very versatile player. His running in the second half kept the clock moving and kept the ball away from an athletic Redemptorist team. We know Northeast will be ready this week.”

Henry rushed for five touchdowns. He toted the ball 35 times for 223 yards.

Haynesville (6-1) moved up a spot to second in Class 1A, while St. Mary’s (6-1) dropped a spot to third. West St. John (5-2) remains ninth.

Kentwood and St. John of Plaquemine also received votes in the latest Class 1A poll.
