1, Catholic (3-1): Yes, the Bears lost to top-ranked Rummel. Unlike a year ago when they lost to the Raiders to a wide margin Catholic showed it should be in the conversation about the 5A elite.
2, Plaquemine (4-0): Playing without QB D’Morea Wicks, the fifth-ranked went on the road to 3A power Jennings and won a shootout. A solid win.
3, Woodlawn (3-1) and Zachary (3-1): Both 5A teams posted signature wins last week and sit less than half s step behind PHS. Woodlawn rebounded from a loss to Plaquemine to beat the top-ranked 4A team, Warren Easton. Zachary posted a huge win over a talented Scotlandville team that is highly regarded.
5, St. Amant (3-1) and Dutchtown (2-2): St. Amant has been impressive in winning three straight since losing to Warren Easton in its opener; Dutchtown has had some ups and downs, but played No. 2 Destrehan solidly. Up next is No. 1 Rummel.
7, Lutcher (3-1): The 4A Bulldogs have been in shootouts seemingly all season and finally lost one to 5A St. Amant. With that said, it sure looks like Lutcher is intent to recapture some past glory.
8, McKinley (3-1): After a shaky start the 5A Panthers have won three straight and are starting to live up to that preseason promise.
9, Denham Springs (2-2): The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a loss to Catholic with a resounding win to open the 4-5A schedule.
10, East Ascension (2-2): It has been a mix of the good and not so good for the Spartans. This revamped teams has improved immensely since a Week 1 loss to Plaquemine.
Up next: Scotlandville (2-2), Central (2-2), Tara (2-2).
Class 3A and below
1, University (4-0): Stilled ranked No. 2 in 3A and off to a solid start in District 7-3A with a big win over Brusly.
2, Livonia (3-0): The 3A Wildcats cruised past Morgan City and face a bigger test this week with McDonogh 25.
3, Parkview Baptist (3-1): The 3A Eagles have been impressive in three straight wins, making that Week 1 loss to 5A Catholic a distant memory.
4, Episcopal (3-0) and Northeast (4-0): Episcopal, ranked seventh in 2A, is unbeaten so far and face a huge test from unbeaten Ascension Catholic this week. The biggest challenges also are ahead for Northeast, which enters its 6-2A slate unbeaten.
6, Ascension Catholic (4-0), White Castle (3-1) and Madison Prep (3-1): These three 1A teams have been very impressive but only White Castle has a top 10 ranking in 1A, something that hopefully changes soon.
9, Port Allen (3-1): The Pelicans responded after a big loss to Livonia by bouncing previously unbeaten West Feliciana in a 7-3A opener while playing without six starters. Pretty impressive.
10, West Feliciana (3-1): Now we get to see how the Saints bounce back from a loss.
Up next: East Feliciana (2-2), Southern Lab (1-3), Donaldsonville (2-2).
