Traditional power Gauthier & Amedee faces a must-win situation at 9 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Southeast Regional Tournament in New Orleans.
The Ascension Parish-based team lost 3-1 in 10 innings to Rummel-based Deanie’s on Saturday morning at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium to open the tourney. The loss puts coach Jamie Morgan’s team in an elimination game against traditional power, Jesuit-based Retif Oil, which lost 3-0 to Hahnville-based Otto Candies on Saturday.
“We’ve got to win this next one or our summer is over,” Morgan said. “It’s that simple. We gave up three unearned runs today, and we can’t afford to do that again.”
Dylan King finished 3-for-4 for G&A (16-6), which finished with six hits. Starting pitcher Brennan Grant went seven innings before Justin Martin came on in relief.
G&A trailed 1-0 through seven innings, but tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Martin scored Gauthier & Amedee’s run on a hit by King.
The Ascension squad had runners on second and third after Martin scored and just missed scoring the winning run when a baserunner was called out on a close play at first. Two errors in the top of the 10th gave Deanie’s the opening it needed to notch the win.
