Two of the five classifications have a new team atop the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association football polls released Tuesday.

St. Paul’s of Covington (2-0) surges from fourth to first in Class 5A, while Ouachita Christian leads the Class 1A rankings.

St. Thomas More in 4A, St. Charles in 3A and John Curtis in 2A are the other top-ranked teams.

The Baton Rouge area began the season with two top-ranked teams in defending state champions Parkview Baptist in Class 3A and White Castle in 1A. Parkview (0-2) has dropped two games to 5A teams and is ranked seventh. White Castle (1-1) lost 23-14 Friday to fifth-ranked Central Catholic-Morgan City (2-0) and dropped to sixth.

Dutchtown (2-0) retains its second-place ranking in Class 5A. The Griffins received four first-place votes, and St. Paul’s received five. St. Paul’s had 112 points and Dutchtown 111. Acadiana (1-1), the top-ranked team last week and the 2010 state champion, dropped to fourth.

Lutcher (1-1) moved up from sixth to fourth in Class 4A after its 42-14 victory over McDonogh 35. Lutcher hosts Hahnville this week, and the Bulldogs faced Dutchtown to open the year.

“We like having a tough schedule early to get us ready for district,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said. “I was pleased with our defensive effort against a good running team in John McDonogh. The kids really executed our defensive game plan.

“It’s good for our program to be ranked in the Top 10. We’re used to having a target on our back.”

Detillier said his team must do a better job of taking care of the football. The Bulldogs have six turnovers in two games.

“Hahnville is bigger, faster and stronger than us, so we’ll have to play with passion and conviction,” he said. “We’re really shaping up into a team.”

East Feliciana (2-0) moved from eighth to third in Class 3A. Amite (1-1) dropped from third to sixth, and Independence (1-1) is eighth.

The third-place ranking is the highest ever for East Feliciana, which is in its second year of existence and advanced to the Class 2A semifinals in 2010.

“I was shocked to hear we’re ranked third,” EFHS coach Cedric Anderson said. “The ranking is good for our kids, school and community. It does give us some confidence. For the most part, our athletes just enjoy playing football.”

EFHS is coming off a 40-6 victory over Capitol. Timothy Scott rushed five times for 78 yards, Kameron McKnight added two rushing touchdowns, and quarterback Kendell Beckwith completed 12 of 16 passes for 125 yards.

“We played a really good second half,” Anderson said. “Our defense is getting better every week. We take what the defense gives us on offense, but we try to stay balanced.”

East Feliciana plays at Class 5A Zachary on Friday.

“Zachary will be a real good test for us,” Anderson said. “They are very talented, and we’ll see if we can slow them down.”

University High (2-0) moved from fourth to third in Class 2A, and Episcopal (2-0) moved from 10th to ninth.

St. John of Plaquemine dropped out of the Class 1A rankings.

Zachary (10 votes), Denham Springs and Scotlandville all received votes in Class 5A.
