The third time was almost the charm for St. Martin’s.

Almost.

St. Martin’s rallied to take a lead in the top of the seventh but couldn’t hold on and fell 5-4 to host Covenant Christian in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs in Houma.

Ryan Boudreaux had the game-winning hit for Covenant Christian in the bottom of the seventh. Covenant Christian (16-7) will advance to the quarterfinals to play Cedar Creek.

St. Martin’s finished 13-6-1, with three of the losses coming against District 9-1A rival Covenant Christian. Covenant Christian, which went undefeated in district, beat St. Martin’s 4-1 and 5-4 in the regular season.

St. Martin’s looked ready to snap that skid, scoring three runs in the seventh to erase a 3-1 deficit and take a 4-3 lead.

Kevin Bird’s line drive to center highlighted the inning for the Saints, but it wasn’t enough.

Covenant Christian pitcher Connor Bates, a LSU-Eunice signee, got the complete game win, striking out 10 and allowing 10 hits, four runs (all earned) and one walk.
