Rensuke Higashihama was living in Okinawa, Japan, this time a year ago.

But in his first year in the United States, the exchange student at Riverdale High School made his mark.

Higashihama was selected to the LSWA Class 4A all-state baseball team.

The senior left-hander went 7-2 on the mound with 105 strikeouts in 732⁄3 innings. He had a 2.73 ERA. He batted .348 with 21 RBIs and 18 stolen bases on his way to earning Most Valuable Player honors in District 10-4A.

He threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a victory over Ben Franklin during the regular season.

“Rensuke is just a great kid,” Riverdale coach Sean Temple told The New Orleans Advocate in April. “He’s our No. 1 all-around player. He loves the game. He works hard every single day. I’ve said to other coaches, ‘If I had 10 more players like him, we’d win the state title. I don’t know how I got so lucky.’ ”

Riverdale reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Higashihama was the only player from the Greater New Orleans area to be named to the 4A all-state team.

Peyton Lejeune of Teurlings Catholic was voted Most Valuable Player after compiling an 11-3 record and helping lead Teurlings Catholic to the Division II state title.

Benton’s J.D. Stephens was chosen as Coach of the Year. Stephens led the No. 9 Tigers to the Class 4A state championship, beating No. 1 Breaux Bridge, No. 5 West Ouachita and No. 3 seed DeRidder during the playoffs.

Alexis Wadsworth, a freshman at Pearl River, was the only area player selected to the 4A all-state softball team. Wadsworth, selected as a utility player, batted .567.

Shortstop Annemarie Peavy of Parkview Baptist was voted Most Valuable Player. Peavy batted .521 with 10 home runs to help lead her school to the Division II championship.

Todd Schulz of Deridder was voted Coach of the Year. Schultz led DeRidder to its first softball championship in school history, beating the top two seeds (West Ouachita and Morgan City) on its road to the title.
