Why settle for just one weekend volleyball tournament when you can have two?

That’s the approach for St. Joseph’s Academy and Tara High this weekend.

SJA’s Red-Hot Sticker Classic and the Tara Slammin’ Classic both begin on Friday with pool play.

Action continues on Saturday morning with additional pool play and bracket play. Final matches for both tourneys is set for mid-afternoon to late afternoon.

Pool play for the 10-team SJA tourney begins at 4 p.m. Friday and continues at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel Academy, host St. Joseph’s (the 2014 Division I runner-up), Cabrini, St. Amant, John Curtis and St. Scholastica are among the teams to watch.

“It’s real early in the season now, but it’s also not November yet,” SJA coach Sivi Miller said. “Teams may still be trying different combinations. The thing we’re looking for and I think most teams want is for the level of play to improve.

“This really is a nice mix of teams. We’ve got Dutchtown with us for the first time along with John Curtis and Sacred Heart-Grand Coteau.

“It’s good to play good competition and teams from different divisions, which we have.”

Pool play for the 15-team Tara Slammin’ Classic starts at 3:30 p.m. Friday and resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Defending champion Woodlawn High and Southern Lab are among the teams to watch, according to Tara coach Barry Jackson.

“Woodlawn has been in the finals of the this tournament every year we’ve had it and they look good again this year,” Jackson said. “Southern Lab is a new team in this tournament, but they’re playing really well. They’re extremely athletic at the net and they won the Brusly (Lady Panther Invitational) last weekend.”
