Boys cross country

Samuel Matthews, Runnels

Matthews provided last week’s biggest breakout performance by winning the Small Schools three-mile boys race at the Varsity Sports/Walker Shootout in 16 minutes, 3.33 seconds at Hutchinson Park. It was a personal best for Matthews, who finished 12 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor.

“I was expecting a few more people who are on my level to be there with me,” Matthews said. “But it felt pretty good to get out there and go fast. I was aiming to get under 16, and I just missed it. This also gives me a good idea what I need to work on for the next race.”

Girls cross country

Gabbi Chauvin, St. Joseph’s Academy

Chauvin helped lead the Redstickers to the Large Schools team title at the Varsity Sports/Walker Shootout by placing second in the individual competition with a three-mile time of 18 minutes, 18.30 seconds on the Hutchinson Park course. The time was a personal best for Chauvin.

“I was conserving my energy during the race,” Chauvin said. “I did that pretty much the whole way. When someone yelled that the finish line was coming up, I took off sprinting. I’m really pleased with how the team did. I think we’re in a good place going into the end of the season.”
