The evolving nature of swimming often makes records a seasonal thing.

That fact made Colin Bone’s performance at Sunday’s Capital City Swim League Championships all the more impressive.

The 16-year-old junior broke two meet records that stood for a combined 44 years while helping Catholic High win its 25th straight CCSL boys title.

“I looked at both of the records and I thought they were within my reach,” Bone said. “I didn’t think I could go as far under them as a I did. I was pumped. The team today was fantastic. Yesterday we had a lot of energy, and today I thought it was doubled.”

Bone garnered All-America consideration with his record times in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races on the final day of the two-day meet held at the Crawfish Aquatics pool.

The Bears also set a record in the day’s final event, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. St. Joseph’s Academy was just as impressive while winning its 15th straight CCSL girls crown. And, like Catholic, the Redstickers also set a 400 relay record.

Bone and St. Joseph’s Amy Miller were selected the meet’s Outstanding Swimmers. Bone’s races during the early stages of the meet help provide drama.

It started with the first boys individual event, the 200 freestyle. Bone broke away from the pack in the first 100 and finished in 1 minute, 39.46 seconds, eclipsing the 2003 record set by Episcopal’s Phillip Morrison, who went on swim that event at Stanford and for Brazil’s Olympic team.

Bone came back and won the 100 in 46.27 seconds, bettering the 1981 record of 46.70 by Catholic’s Brian Zielinski, who earned All-America honors at Florida.

“I saw that time (the 100 freestyle record) and knew I wanted to do it,” Bone said. “To know it’s a record that stood for more than 30 years … that’s crazy.”

SJA’s Miller continued a form of the family business by winning the girls honor. Her sister, Mary Katherine, won it the past two years.

The two wins for Miller weren’t easy. The junior will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in her elbow after the season. She provided an early surprise just before Bone set his second record by edging teammate Caroline Beene to win the girls 100 in 52.10 seconds.

Miller then won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.55, a fraction of a second off the meet record set two years ago.

“More than anything else, I was trying to do whatever I could to help our team and our seniors win,” Miller said. “I wanted that (breaststroke) record, but I’m happy with my time and getting the points for the team.”

Catholic tallied 602 points to win the boys title, while St. Joseph’s rolled up 569 on the girls side. Catholic won all but two individual events. SJA won all but one individual event.

Episcopal was second to SJA in the girls competition with 317.50, followed by Dutchtown at 187 and Parkview Baptist at 158. Zachary scored 162 to place second to Catholic in the boys division with Lutcher at 154, Dunham at 147 and Episcopal 136.

“I was real proud of the way we swam all weekend,” Catholic coach Doug Logsdon said. “We really stayed together as a team with guys cheering for their teammates all the way through.”

The Bears broke a nine-year-old record while winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:12.67. SJA won its 400 freestyle relay in 3:34.88, five-hundreds of a second better than a record set last season.

There were four other double winners. Catholic’s Brady Grenfell won the 50 freestyle (22.26) and the 100 butterfly (53.08). Dunham’s Kirland Mawae won the 100 backstroke (52.81) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.88). St. Joseph’s Clayton Black won the 200 freestyle (1:51.63) and 500 freestyle (5:03.38) The Redstickers’ Jeanne Frederic won the 200 individual medley (2:13.01) and 100 butterfly (58.38).
