East Ascension and St. Michael the Archangel represent different ends of the LHSAA soccer playoff spectrum.
The Division I EAHS girls (13-9-1) are a young team, a No. 15 seed set to travel to No. 2 St. Scholastica. The senior-laden St. Michael boys (20-4-5) are a No. 2 seed, and they’ll host a familiar foe in No. 15 Teurlings Catholic.
“We knew after graduating eight seniors we’d be young,” EAHS coach Chris Goodall said. “Factor in a couple of ACL injuries, and we’re relying a lot on six freshmen. But this group has been a lot of fun. Regardless of what happens, this is something they’ll learn from.”
The Spartans travel to Covington to take on SSA at 5 p.m. Wednesday, though some area girls teams will play their regional-round playoff games Tuesday.
St. Michael hosts Teurlings at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Burbank Soccer Complex.
“We’ve played Teurlings in the past and done a lot of different things to game plan for them,” SMHS coach Paul Fletcher said. “This is the strongest and deepest team we’ve had in my 10 years here. We want to be aggressive and attack as much as possible and not worry so much about planning.”
East Ascension beat Lafayette High in the first round in the most dramatic way possible: a sudden-death shootout, with freshman Lizzy Austin converting the decisive penalty kick.
St. Michael is led by Mitchell Williams, who has 97 career goals. AJ Fletcher is the state leader in assists with 32, and Joel DeRobertis is another key offensive weapon.
The teams are part of a solid contingent set for regional play. Game times have not been announced for several games.
Division I, District 5 girls rivals St. Joseph’s Academy and Baton Rouge High split their games in the regular season. The teams meet again Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Burbank Field 20.
Denham Springs, the Division I, District 4 girls champion, plays No. 3 Dominican at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans.
The St. Michael girls host Neville at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Burbank in Division II action. Lutcher hosts E.D. White at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, also in Division II.
University High hosts Episcopal School of Acadiana at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Division III girls action. That game is part of a boys-girls doubleheader.
The UHS boys host Haynes Academy at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Runnels of Division III hosts St. Frederick at 5 p.m. Tuesday at U-High.
Catholic High hosts Sulphur at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Burbank Field 18 in Division I boys action. Denham Springs hosts Bonnabel at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Dutchtown hosts Mandeville at 6 p.m. Thursday, also in Division I.
In Division III boys action, there are two Tuesday games: Episcopal at Newman at 6 p.m., and Parkview Baptist at Northlake Christian at 7 p.m.
