Livonia and St. Michael the Archangel climbed to their highest rankings in school history in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association football polls released today.

Livonia (6-0) is the fifth-ranked team in Class 3A and had never been ranked as a 3A school before this season. St. Michael (6-0) is 10th in Class 4A. Livonia was seventh last week and St. Michael 11th. St. Michael was ranked 11th one other time, in 2000, and this is the first time in 25 seasons of football for the Warriors to crack the top 10.

All five top-ranked teams remained the same. St. Paul’s of Covington is the top team in Class 5A, St. Thomas More leads 4A, St. Charles Catholic leads 3A, John Curtis leads 2A and Ouachita Christian leads 1A.

Dutchtown (6-0) remains second in Class 5A. The Griffins earned two first-place votes and 131 points, while St. Paul’s garnered nine first-place votes and 142 points. Carencro (6-0) moved up a spot to third, while Acadiana (4-2) drops five spots to eighth.

“Being ranked second is nice for the fans and means we’re winning,” Dutchtown coach Benny Saia said. “We’re more focused on the power points. We played our most complete game of the season and forced five turnovers last week, and I’m pleased with that.”

Dutchtown defeated St. Amant 48-14.

Livonia is coming off a 52-19 victory over previously undefeated Rayne.

The Bulldogs average 42.1 ppg. Livonia entertains preseason favorite Eunice (5-1) in a key District 5-3A game Friday between two 1-0 teams. Eunice had 13 points and is ranked 13th in the latest poll.

“We’re really clicking on all cylinders,” Livonia coach David Brewerton said. “We have a good balance of throwing and running the ball and our defense has played well. The kids are feeling good right now.

“We expect a slugfest against Eunice. We’re excited about the opportunity to be 2-0 in district but know it won’t be easy.”

Lutcher (5-1) dropped a spot to fifth in Class 4A. Assumption (6-0) moves up a spot to fourth. St. Michael entertains Lutcher Friday at Louisiana Leadership Institute’s Doug Williams Stadium.

Lutcher is 3-0 in District 6-4A and St. Michael 2-0.

“It means a lot to be ranked in the Top 10 and it’s something we’ve never done in 25 years of football here,” St. Michael coach Eric Held said. “We’ve been a playoff team for the last three years. We’re not satisfied.

“The next step we need to take is to earn a signature win, whether against Lutcher, Plaquemine or advancing far in the playoffs. If we want to be spoken about in the same way as Lutcher, we need to go out and get the ?W’.”

Independence (4-2) dropped three spots to seventh in Class 3A. Defending state champion Parkview Baptist (3-3) moves up a spot to ninth.

University (6-0) remained third in Class 2A. Episcopal (5-1) dropped a spot to seventh following its 21-17 loss to U-High last week.
