Dutchtown High School has a defensive backs tradition that includes former LSU star Eric Reid, now a Pro Bowl performer with the San Francisco 49ers.

Alonzo Craighton and Reid’s younger brother, Justin, are among the players primed to extend their careers at least to college.

Craighton got the jump on the others, at least in terms of picking a college, by committing to the University of Minnesota on Thursday.

“It was just a really nice place when I went up there to visit,” Craighton said. “The coaches were very blunt with me about their expectations and what role I’d have. They told me I’d have every opportunity to play next year if I work hard. They could see me getting on the field on special teams and as a nickel back.”

It’s important to note that Craighton’s decision to commit was anything but an impulse move after a visit. He visited the Big Ten school in early September. Other schools still recruiting the 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior include Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Kansas State, Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech.

Though he is committed to the Gophers, Craighton said he still plans to make official visits to both UL-Lafayette and Southern Miss. No dates for those trips are set.

Craighton has already met the NCAA’s academic qualifying standards and said he plans a college major in political science/business management.
