St. Charles Catholic football coach Frank Monica and former Independence football coach Charles Baglio were honored with Distinguished Service awards for their work with the Louisiana Football Coaches Association on Saturday.
The duo was recognized as Founding Fathers in the organization that was started in 1988.
Monica and Baglio were recognized at halftime of the Class 5A state championship game on Saturday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
PBS coaching change
Jessica Shelton stepped down as girls basketball coach at Parkview Baptist and assistant Christina Anderson has taken over as the interim coach for the Eagles. Parkview Athletic Director Kenny Guillot said Shelton has taken on an administrative role at the school. Anderson is a former Bethany Christian player.
Red Stick Bowl
Preparations for the U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl, set Dec. 20 at Olympia Stadium, begin Sunday. Coaches and players are scheduled to meet at 2:30 p.m. in the Woodlawn High School gym. Players must have the original player participation form signed before they will be allowed to practice Monday. Red Stick Bowl practices are set from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Independence Park.
Silliman Institute’s Zach Kelly and Will Douglas earned MVP honors on the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools all-state football team for Classes 3A/4A.
Kelly played quarterback and was the Offensive Player of the Year. Douglas, a linebacker, was a co-Defensive MVP for Silliman, which won the MAIS 3A title last month.
The Wildcats’ Michael Beauchamp (defensive line), Brian Siebert (linebacker) and Devin Gros (defensive back) were other Silliman players on the team.
Oak Forest Academy running back Kaylin Stewart and tight end Dalton Brabham were also on the MAIS 3A/4A squad. Oak Forest won an MAIS 4A title.
A Louisiana High School Powerlifting Association rules clinic for officials is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 807 at Woodlawn High School.

Umpires to meet
The Baton Rouge area’s LHSOA chapter of softball umpires will host a spring registration meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday at Brusly High. All returning umpires and those interested in becoming a high school umpire this spring should plan to register.
Former Dunham standout Jyron Walker started the past seven games at defensive back for the University of Pennsylvania.
Penn won the Ivy League championship with Walker, who played quarterback and defensive back at Dunham, making key plays in a win over previously unbeaten Harvard. Walker blocked a field goal try in the fourth quarter and also had a pass break-up on fourth down to help Penn snap Harvard’s 22-game winning streak.
