The Country Day Cajuns spoiled homecoming for the Crescent City Pioneers with a 56-0 rout at Bertolino Stadium on Thursday. The Cajuns improved to 4-1and 3-0 in district while Crescent City fell to 0-4.
Country Day opened the scoring on their second drive with an 8-yard touchdown run by Jase Griffin. Griffin had 53 rushing yards on the drive.
On the Pioneers next possession, Trey Harrell picked off a Tanner Edmonson pass and returned it to the Crescent City three. Griffin punched it in on the next play.
Jonathan Caldwell intercepted Edmonson’s next pass attempt to set up another touchdown run from 6 yards out.
Griffin later found the end zone for a fourth time to give the Cajuns a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. He scored again from 40 yards out on a one play drive in the second quarter to put the game out of reach before halftime. Patrick Kern later scored to give Country Day a 42-0 lead at the half.
Griffin closed out the first half with 125 rushing yards on just 12 carries and five touchdowns.
The running game was so successful for Country Day that quarterback Morgan Farrell threw just four passes before he was removed midway through the second quarter with the game well in hand.
The Cajuns defense had a fantastic night. They held the Pioneers to just 39 total yards and one first down in the first half, did not allow a single completed pass and forced four turnovers, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, in the first 24 minutes.
The defense continued their stellar play in the second half and kept the shutout intact.
Crescent City will continue to look for their its win on the road against Covenant Christian next Friday. Country Day will go for their third straight win at St. Martin’s next week.
