Edna Karr got off to a sluggish start Monday night.
The finish was almost worse. Almost.
No. 4 Karr led by as many as 16 points early in the fourth quarter, then escaped with a 56-54 victory over No. 13 Carencro in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
“A win is a win and we’ll take it,” said Karr coach Jessica Barber. “Hats off to Carencro for a hard-fought game and not giving up.”
Karr (22-7) advances to the quarterfinals and will host No. 5 Bastrop.
The Cougars’ ticket to the quarterfinals didn’t come until Carencro’s Ava Jones desperation shot as time expired missed.
Karr led 45-29 early in the fourth before Carencro (17-8) started clawing back. Karr’s lead slipped to 56-53 with 36 seconds left and then the Cougars were called for an intentional foul (on an inbounds pass) with two seconds left. Jada Taylor made one of two free throws before Jones’ missed what would have been the game-tying basket.
Karr could have sealed it down the stretch, but missed five straight free throws in the final minute.
But Karr did enough in the second and third quarter to build enough cushion.
Karr didn’t score its first field goal until the 2:57 mark of the first quarter on a steal and lay-up by Destanie Johnson. The Cougars trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the visiting Bears 27-8 in the second quarter.
Karr took its first lead of the game 14-13 when Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner with 4:42 left in the half. Johnson and company closed the quarter on a 13-0 run.
Johnson led Karr with 14 points. Paige Williams scored nine points and Imani Mulmore and Destiny Collins scored eight points each.
Jones scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Bears. Chrissy Brown chipped in 12 points and Jakaylon Fils had nine on three 3-pointers.
