Parkview Baptist’s resiliency went a long way in enabling the Eagles to open the season with a 33-26 victory over Catholic High.

Parkview rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the first quarter, pulling even at 26 before quarterback Reggie Hayes provided the go-ahead touchdown with less than six minutes to play.

The stunning turn of events propelled Parkview past Catholic — which had been Class 5A’s eighth-ranked team — and catapulted the Eagles up two spots to No. 1 in the Class 3A state rankings released Tuesday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

“I would hope they handle it the way it needs to be handled,” Parkview coach Jay Mayet said of his team. “We preach to them all the time (that) it’s not about who you play; it matters how you play. We try and emphasize (that) it doesn’t matter what the scoreboard says; it matters how you play the game.”

Parkview shares some of the local limelight with Southern Lab, the new No. 1 team in Class 1A. The Kittens knocked off Bogalusa 35-0. The previous top-ranked team, Haynesville, lost 34-13 to Class 3A North Webster.

Southern Lab received 8 of 11 first-place votes and 128 total points. Its district 6-1A archrival, No. 2 Kentwood (1-0), had two first-place votes and 119 points.

Zachary (1-0), which hosts Catholic on Friday, maintained its No. 5 ranking in Class 5A, and the Bears dropped out of the poll.

Livonia (0-1) and Plaquemine (0-1) suffered season-opening losses and subsequently tumbled from the Class 4A rankings.

Madison Prep (1-0), which defeated Livonia 13-7, is one of three District 6-2A teams garnering votes in Class 2A, with East Feliciana (1-0) and Episcopal (1-0).

Parkview’s opening to the top of Class 3A was created when reigning Division II select state champion University (0-1) lost to Class 5A’s No. 2 team, Archbishop Rummel, 24-7. The strength of the Eagles’ victory was enough to vault them over No. 2 Amite (1-0), which defeated St. Helena Central 44-12.

Parkview’s perch atop 3A will be tested right away with the Eagles headed Thursday to Class 2A’s No. 9 Riverside (0-1), followed by another Thursday game Sept. 17 at home against Class 5A’s No. 4 team, John Curtis (1-0).

PBS halted its two-game skid against Catholic behind a superb effort from Hayes, who accounted for nearly 200 yards and five TDs. Running back Kayin White added 138 yards on 16 carries.

“Even though these guys are very experienced and we’ve got a lot of returners back, they’ve never been ranked No. 1,” said Mayet, who returned 18 starters. “This is definitely something new to them. I hope they view it as a compliment to the program and to them.

“But they have to keep doing the things they need to in order to maintain that position and not rest on it.”
