Madison Prep enters LSWA Class 2A poll at No. 10 _lowres

The waves Madison Prep Academy made toward the end of last season with an appearance in the Division IV state semifinals were being felt again the first week of this season.

With a step up to Class 2A, the Chargers went on the road to spring a 13-7 victory at Livonia, last year’s Class 3A state champion, in the season opener for both teams.

Madison Prep hasn’t stopped since. Four consecutive victories to start the year finally enabled the Chargers to jump into the latest Louisiana Sportswriters Association rankings at No. 10 in the Class 2A poll.

“We’re glad about it and grateful to be ranked,” Madison Prep coach Michael Roach said. “That’s a great accomplishment, but I really want to be ranked in December. That’s where we want to be.”

Roach, who previously coached at Southern Lab, understands his team’s new-found status can be short-lived if not handled properly.

“When I was at Lab in 1995, we were ranked No. 1 for a long time and lost in the first round of the playoffs,” he said. “I try not to pay too much attention to it. I’m worried about who we’ve got for the next game.”

Madison Prep, which travels to East Feliciana (2-2, 0-1) for a key District 6-2A encounter Friday, picked up 29 votes and replaced Pickering (3-1), a 9-0 loser to DeRidder, with Northeast (3-1) garnering votes.

Zachary (3-1) dipped four spots to No. 8 in Class 5A following its 42-28 loss to Calvary Baptist, while Scotlandville and St. Amant, both of whom are undefeated, each received votes.

District 7-3A held firm with No. 1 University High (3-1) and No. 5 Parkview Baptist (2-2) in the Class 3A rankings with fellow league members West Feliciana and Brusly each picking up votes.

Southern Lab (3-1) maintained the No. 2 spot in Class 1A behind Sterlington. The Kittens received a first-place vote and 120 points, while White Castle also received votes.

Madison Prep followed up its win over Livonia with a 48-20 victory at White Castle, which was ranked No. 10 at the time.

The Chargers, who are allowing 10.5 points, were also dominating in a 27-15 win at Class 5A’s East St. John and 43-0 in last week’s 6-2A opener over Friendship Capitol.

Quarterback Edwin Kleinpeter accounted for three touchdowns, Tyrese Walked returned a kickoff 60 yards for a score. MPA’s defense led by Malcolm Roach, Everette Richard and Tasmin Walker, limited Capitol to 14 yards of offense, registered four sacks and forced a pair of turnovers.

“Our quarterback has really done a good job in his progression this year,” Roach said. “I’m real pleased with that, and what can you say about the defensive guys? They’ve worked hard and have prepared each week.

“The rankings will be big for the kids,” Roach said. “We try and downplay it, but it will be big for them to see a third-year program and we’re right in the hunt.”
