Holy Cross (1-1) at Chalmette (1-1)
Last week: Holy Cross beat Sulphur 34-27; Chalmette beat Northshore 45-30.
Last year: Holy Cross won 44-2.
The buzz: Holy Cross has outscored Chalmette 75-8 the past two years and hasn’t allowed an offensive touchdown in those two games; QB Kyle Schexnayder, RB Tre Turner (323 rushing yards) and WR Michael Chigbu (a Georgia commit) give the Tigers a trio of big-play weapons. Connor Lambert (38 carries, 248 yards) leads the Owls.
Mandeville (0-2) at Central Lafourche (2-0)
Last week: Mandeville lost to Catholic 48-0; Central Lafourche beat Clark 37-7.
Last year: Mandeville won 56-0.
The buzz: Skippers showed promise in season opener, giving up just 14 points to perennial power John Curtis., but they have yet to score a point this season. RB Daquan Gray and QB Austin Aucoin lead the Central Lafourche offense. The Trojans have allowed just 7 points through first two games.
McDonogh 35 (0-2) at St. Paul’s (1-1)
Last week: McDonogh 35 lost to Lutcher 40-39; St. Paul’s lost to Jesuit 49-22.
Last year: McDonogh 35 won 24-21.
The buzz: The Roneagles let lead slip away for a second straight week last week, this time surrendering three fourth-quarter TDs and falling in overtime. RB Darius May scored three touchdowns and has plenty of other playmakers on his team with WR Darius Williams and QB Sidney Wilson. QB Ryan O’Krepki steers a St. Paul’s team looking to return to the Week 1 form when it beat Karr.
Newman (2-0) at Pope John Paul II (0-2)
Last week: Newman beat Riverdale 56-33; Pope John Paul II lost to Pearl River 9-7.
Last year: Newman won 55-7.
The buzz: The Greenies, ranked No. 2 in The New Orleans Advocate’s Small School Super 10, are averaging 51.5 points. Potent 1-2 punch of QB Jay Tyler (390 passing yards, 256 rushing yards) and RB Kendall Bussey (295 yards rushing, eight TDs) make the Greenies go. First-year coach Daryl Thomas is hoping for huge upset to secure his first victory. QB Chanse Caire rushed for 88 yards last week for Jags.
Pearl River (1-1) at Northlake Christian (2-0)
Last week: Pearl River beat Pope John Paul II 9-7; Northlake Christian beat Cohen 42-8.
Last year: Northlake Christian won 53-22.
The buzz: The Wolverines, perfect in the regular season last year, are still rolling along and are ranked No. 6 in The New Orleans Advocate’s Small School Super 10. They have outscored their two opponents 78-14. Rebels got a safety in the fourth quarter last week to hand first-year coach Paul Beebe his first win and snapping the school’s six-game skid dating back to last season.
Riverside (2-0) at West St. John (2-0)
Last week: Riverside beat Loranger 37-3; West St. John beat Bogalusa 19-12.
Last year: Riverside won 35-32.
The buzz: Small-school showdown between Rebels, ranked No. 3 in Small School rankings and Rams, ranked No. 5. Von Julien hauled in five receptions for 197 yards and 3 TDs for the Rebels last week. Rams forced four turnovers last week and got a late touchdown pass from Jemoine Green to Morell Bartholomew to remain undefeated.
Salmen (0-2) at Northshore (1-1)
Last week: Salmen lost 37-14 to Denham Springs; Northshore lost 45-30 to Chalmette.
Last year: Northshore won 13-6.
The buzz: The Panthers’ QB Matt Benedict showed his big-play ability, throwing 80- and 86-yard touchdowns last week to Cory Duplessis and Jamie Yepez, respectively, last week. Spartans scored 14 points in both of first two games, but have allowed 35 and 37 points.
Shaw (1-1) at South Lafourche (1-1)
Last week: Shaw beat Cohen 60-6; South Lafourche beat South Plaquemines 49-8.
Last year: Shaw won 42-7.
The buzz: Shaw RB Trey Ragas, won of the state’s top juniors, has rushed for 222 yards this season and teammate Matt Keller has thrown for 248 yards. Tarpons blocked four punts last week, including two that went for touchdowns and two more that resulted in safeties.
Slidell (2-0) at Lakeshore (1-1)
Last week: Slidell beat Bonnabel 27-12; Lakeshore lost to Fontainebleau 42-0.
Last year: Lakeshore won 28-27 in overtime.
The buzz: Kain Mitchell (273 rushing yards this season) is the workhorse for the Tigers. Titans counter with RB David Ducre, who has committed to play next season at LSU. Ducre was held to just 22 yards last week after a stellar outing in Week One when he rushed for 286 yards in Week 1.
Sophie B. Wright (1-1) at Lusher (1-1)
Last week: Wright lost to Haynes 35-20; Lusher lost to Central Catholic 35-33.
Last year: Lusher won 56-6.
The buzz: Eli Poche has completed 26 of 48 passes for 452 yards for the Lions. Louis Landrum III has caught eight passes for 199 yards. Joshua Barney gives Lusher a ground threat as well, rushing for 210 yards on 25 carries. QB Derek Robinson leads the Warriors.
St. Augustine (1-1) at Covington (1-1)
Last week: St. Augustine lost to Karr 25-19. Covington lost to Franklinton 28-27.
Last year: St. Augustine won 40-27.
The buzz: Purple Knights were plagued by turnovers in last week’s loss to Karr. RB Darryl Landry filled in for Lanard Fournette (ankle) and went over the 100-yard mark. Freshman Devin Brumfield leads the Lions offense, rushing for 206 this season.
St. Martin’s (0-2) at Ben Franklin (1-1), 4 p.m.
Last week: St. Martin’s lost to Thomas Jefferson 24-12; Ben Franklin lost to Country Day 32-3.
Last year: Ben Franklin won 38-33.
The buzz: Saints, under direction of first-year coach and former Tulane QB Lester Ricard, looking to snap a four-game losing skid dating to last season. The Falcons rushed for 94 yards last week in their loss to Country Day.
Vandebilt Catholic (0-2) at St. James (0-2)
Last week: Vandebilt Catholic lost 13-10 to Thibodaux; St. James lost 20-14 to E.D. White.
Last year: Vandebilt Catholic won 22-18.
The buzz: Both teams have lost to E.D. White, with Terriers losing 21-17 in their season opener. Terriers held what can be a power running attack of Thibodaux to just 10 points. The Wildcats looking to avoid slow start for a second straight year after beginning 2013 0-4.
West Jefferson (0-2) at Lutcher (2-0)
Last week: West Jefferson lost to Warren Easton 59-14; Lutcher beat McDonogh 35 40-39.
Last year: West Jefferson won 23-19.
The buzz: The Buccaneers, looking to hand Kevin Fox his first victory, are coming off short week after having played a Sunday game against Easton. QB Coley Ransaw leads the Bucs’ offense, while the defense is anchored by Tulane commit Louis Wings. Third of four straight road games for West Jefferson. Nick Remondet kicked game-wining extra point in overtime as Lutcher rallied (scoring 3 TDs in fourth quarter) vs. McDonogh 35.
