Dutchtown maintained its second-place ranking in Class 5A for the third straight week in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association High School football polls released Tuesday.

St. Paul’s of Covington is the top team in Class 5A and received nine first-place votes to two for Dutchtown. Last week, St. Paul’s edged Dutchtown for the top spot by one vote.

This week, St. Paul’s earned 130 votes to 119 for DHS.

Dutchtown (3-0) entertains Zachary (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. Zachary has 11 votes in the latest poll and is currently ranked 13th.

A victory over Dutchtown would likely propel ZHS into the Top 10. Both teams have high-powered offenses as Dutchtown has scored 112 points and Zachary 106 in three games.

“I think Dutchtown is underrated and should be the top team in Class 5A,” Zachary coach Neil Weiner said. “Landon Collins of Dutchtown is the best player in the state and possibly the country. It’s going to be an honor for us to be on the field with them.”

“Zachary should be ranked second instead of us,” Dutchtown coach Benny Saia said. “Zachary is a senior-loaded team and weighs 275 pounds across the front. We’re really inexperienced, but improving every week. Hopefully, we can go in our house and fight and win a game against a good Zachary team that doesn’t have any weaknesses. We’re going to have to play really well to win.”

Before this year, Zachary and Dutchtown battled in preseason scrimmages.

“A scrimmage is nothing like a real game,” Weiner said. “We still have room for improvement.

“I think we have our best football ahead of us. We had six turnovers last week and will have to take care of the ball.”

Acadiana is third, West Jefferson fourth and Carencro fifth in Class 5A.

St. Thomas More is the top team in Class 4A. Lutcher (2-1) remains fourth.

Lutcher dropped its opener to Dutchtown 32-8, but has been impressive in its last two games.

“We’re getting better each week,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said. “We just finished a difficult predistrict schedule and basically survived physically. We’re starting district much earlier than we have the last few years, but we’re excited about it. I feel we’re ready.”

Lutcher, which won three state titles in 3A the last 10 years, is a new team in District 6-4A.

Lutcher hosts Tara (1-2) in its 6-4A opener Friday.

St. Charles Catholic, Patterson, Notre Dame, Amite (2-1) and East Feliciana (2-1) are the top five teams in Class 3A. East Feliciana dropped from third to fifth after its exciting 36-32 loss to Zachary. Defending state champion Parkview Baptist (1-2) and Independence (2-1) both moved up one spot to sixth and seventh, respectively.

John Curtis, Winfield and University (3-0) are the top three teams in Class 2A. Episcopal (3-0) moves up one spot to eighth.

Ouachita Christian, Haynesville and Central Catholic of Morgan City are the top three teams in Class 1A. Defending state champion White Castle (1-2) dropped from sixth to ninth.

Scotlandville (9 votes), Denham Springs (5) and East Ascension (1) also received votes in Class 5A, while St. Michael the Archangel (6) earned votes in Class 4A and St. John (17) of Plaquemine earned votes in Class 1A.
