Madison Prep forced six turnovers and eliminated defending state champion Vermilion Catholic with a 28-14 Division IV quarterfinal playoff victory Friday night at Glen Oaks.
No. 9 Madison Prep (8-4) scored 14 points in the third quarter to break open a game that was tied at 14 at halftime.
Madison Prep’s Brian Savoie had two fourth-quarter interceptions to stop top-seeded VCHS (10-2). Teammate Braylen Bolden had a 44-yard interception return to start the scoring with 7:31 remaining in the first quarter.
VCHS drove 75 yards in 14 plays to take its only lead of the game at 7-6 with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter. Hunter Frith tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to Tyler Derouen, and Emile Trahan added the PAT.
“We might be the best-kept secret in Louisiana,” Madison Prep coach Michael Roach said. “We told our kids that this game was for the state championship, and they really stepped up.”
Madison Prep is in just its second season of varsity football and won its first playoff game last week. The Chargers get a semifinal rematch with No. 5 Southern Lab (7-5) next Friday at Doug Williams Stadium. The Kittens won the first game 63-6.
VCHS coach Russell Kuhns said Madison Prep had a good game plan.
“It’s hard to win a game with six turnovers,” Kuhns said. “The fact it was only a 14-point game was unbelievable. We didn’t play like we normally play.”
VCHS quarterback Frith passed for over 2,000 yards coming into the game. He completed 12 of 30 passes for 137 yards with three interceptions.
“We played a man trap defensive coverage they hadn’t seen before,” Roach said. “It confused them. We didn’t blitz as much as normal because they get the ball out so quick.”
Madison Prep’s Carl Ricks recovered a fumble on the first play of the second quarter to set up a 33-yard, four-play drive. Everett Richard caught a 16-yard scoring pass from Edwin Kleinpeter and caught the two-point conversion for a 14-7 lead.
The Madison Prep defense forced a quick punt. As the punt ball was rolling, it hit an MP player and VCHS recovered to set up a 38-yard, seven-play drive. Trahan caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Frith.
Madison Prep drove 70 yards in nine plays. Kleinpeter had a 31-yard run and Tejuan Spurlock scored on a 3-yard run for a 20-14 lead.
VCHS fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Tyrese Walker recovered to set up a two-play, 63-yard drive. MPA’s Charrod Brumfield tossed a 48-yard pass to Jaylen Brown and Malcolm Roach ran for two points to complete the scoring with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.
Spurlock rushed 10 times for 74 yards and Kleinpeter had nine carries for 65 yards. Richard had six catches for 61 yards.
Derouen had five catches for 64 yards for VCHS.
