Chalmette coach Butch Stockton said he was worried when 6-foot-11 center Mitchell Robinson fouled out of Friday’s game at Bonnabel with 2:11 left in overtime.
However, Owls guards Glen Shawn Amos and Carlton Campbell would not let it slip away. Chalmette held on for a 72-67 victory that kept it unbeaten in District 8-5A.
“Glen Shawn and Carlton played well the whole game,” Stockton said. “They definitely were the difference at the end.”
Calvin Louis scored 19 points, Robinson 18 and Amos 11. Joe Thompson scored 22 to lead Bonnabel. Devante James had 16 for Bonnabel.
Chalmette (17-5, 3-0) will play Landry-Walker on Tuesday in a big early district game. Bonnabel (15-3, 0-2) lost its second consecutive game after grabbing a sizeable first-quarter lead.
With Chalmette leading 64-61 after Robinson fouled out, Amos drove the length of the court and scored on a three-point play with 1:32 showing. After Bruins guard TJ Collins made two free throws to cut the lead to 67-63, Amos and Campbell dribbled valuable time off the clock before Campbell sank a free throw.
The Owls made their next four free throws and played defense to keep Bonnabel at bay.
Chalmette nearly lost in regulation. The Owls led 58-53 with 2:15 left, but Bonnabel scored the last five points, sending it into overtime. The Bruins held the ball for the final minute only to turn it over with two seconds left.
With Robinson scoring eight points on rebound dunks and two on a tournaround jumper in the lane, Chalmette led 49-46 going into the fourth quarter.
Just like its previous game against Landry-Walker, Bonnabel shot out to a big lead only to see its opponent come back by halftime.
The Bruins scored the game’s first seven points and led 14-1 at the five-minute mark before ending the quarter with a 22-12 lead. Bonnabel attacked the lane with backdoor cuts away from Robinson, who still had four blocks in the quarter.
Chalmette took a lot of shots from the outside in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Owls got the ball to Robinson for dunks on the fast break, and he also had two tip-ins.
However, in the second quarter, the Owls also began hitting from the outside and scoring off Bonnabel turnovers. Chalmette went on a 14-3 run to come within 33-32 with 50 seconds left. Guard Justin Johnson then sank a 3-pointer with 36 seconds showing, and Thompson made one of two free throws with 14.5 left, as the Bruins went into halftime leading 37-32.
