MARRERO – Brother Martin pitcher Jarett Gongora threw six hitless innings and Connor Fallon closed out the no-hitter as Brother Martin defeated Shaw 7-1.

It was the Catholic League opener for both teams.

The Crusaders wasted little time to give Gongora all the run support he would need.

Daniel Lahare hit an opposite field homer to left centerfield on the second pitch of the game to get things started for Brotherr Martin. The Crusaders added a run in the inning when Owen Magee grounded out to drive in Jarrett Gongora, who doubled after Lahare’s homer.

The Crusaders broke it open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to build a 7-0 lead. Shaw starting pitcher Jace Nini hit Kevin Stretzinger with the bases loaded to start the Brother Martin rally. Brice Johnson followed it with a perfectly laid bunt to drive in another run. Then Gongora singled to center to clear the bases. He had two RBIs on the play and the third runner scored on an error.

Shaw (12-6, 0-1) scored its only run in the fourth on Kyle Flettrich’s sacrifice fly to right.
