St. Joseph’s Academy’s Red Hot Sticker Classic volleyball tournament helps highlight a busy weekend that includes another volleyball tournament, a cross country meet that will feature more than 1,000 runners and two swim meets.
Much of the buzz will be about the two-day SJA tourney that begins with pool play at 4 p.m. Friday. The 10-team tourney could feature the latest rematch between the host Redstickers and Mount Carmel Academy.
The Battlefield Cross Country Festival at the Port Hudson State Historic site in Jackson. Woodlawn’s Rumble in the Jungle volleyball tournament and two Capital City Swim League meets also are scheduled.
“There are a lot of tournaments out there and a lot places teams can go,” SJA coach Sivi Miller said. “I’m excited about having so many talented teams from other parts of the state coming to Baton Rouge for this one.
“Because it’s a best-of-three (sets) format instead of the usual best-of-five format, it forces teams and players to adjust very quickly. Tournament play like this does help you get ready for the playoffs and the state tournament.”
St. Joseph’s is the defending Division I state champion, while MCA was the runner-up. St. Amant was a Division I semifinalist.
The tourney field also includes defending Division II champion St. Thomas More, Division IV semifinalist Notre Dame, Division IV quarterfinalist University High and Division II quarterfinalist Cabrini.
Pool play also begins at 4 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn’s 28-team Rumble in the Jungle tourney. Defending Division IV state champion Newman helps lead the field of teams that also includes Baton Rouge High, winner of last weekend’s Slammin’ Classic at Tara.
The Rumble in the Jungle final is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Races at the third annual Battlefield Cross Country Festival begin at 8:20 a.m. with a combined two-mile race for junior varsity/junior high girls. The two-mile JV/junior high boys race is at 8:45 p.m.
The three-mile girls varsity race is scheduled for 9:10 a.m., followed by the three-mile boys varsity race at 9:45 a.m.

Meanwhile, defending CCSL/Division I state champions St. Joseph’s Academy and Catholic High team with Lutcher, the Division III boys runner-up, help headline the second meet.
