The St. Scholastica girls soccer team took its first step toward what it hopes will be a Division I title repeat Thursday night.

The second-seeded Doves, easily beat fellow District 6 opponent Slidell 7-0 in a bi-district playoff. The match was held at Northlake Christian School in Covington because of wet field conditions at the SSA Sports Complex north of Covington.

St. Scholastica (17-1-3) was led by senior Maggie Otillio’s three goals. Megan Whittemore, Megan Moser, Sami Vercher, and Zoe Perrin each scored once, according to SSA team statistics.

“Coming into the game, we knew this was our first playoff of the year, and that’s when things get real serious,” Otillio said.

Moser, a fellow senior, said it was important to make an early statement against Slidell.

“We have to take every game like it’s our last,” she said. “Even with all the commotion tonight with Senior Night, we had to come out and play our game. And I think that the seniors wanted to come out tonight and make a mark, because it is our night.”

By the time the first half ended, SSA had outshot Slidell 12-0 and was well on its way to the regional playoff round. The Doves outshot Slidell 21-0 in the match.

In the earlier district meeting between the schools, St. Scholastica defeated Slidell, 6-1. SSA coach Mike Ortner said he was happier with this outing against the Tigers than the first.

“We gave up more shots in the first match,” Ortner said. “So to play defense like we did today was impressive. It’s hard to find fault in a 7-0 win, but if anything, we’ll need to make more of the shots like we had tonight when we get deeper into the playoffs.”
