Sydney Davis and her St. Joseph’s Academy teammates reflected on some fond memories Thursday when they stepped into the Pontchartrain Center.
It was in that building a year ago that Davis and her teammates celebrated a Division I state championship last season.
Davis and the Redstickers picked up right where they left off, beating Chapelle 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) in the Division I quarterfinals.
“It was crazy coming back in here,” said Davis. “We look forward to it every year. We were just ready to play and keep advancing.”
Davis finished with 15 kills, four aces and 16 digs for top-seeded St. Joseph’s.
“We know that coming in as state champions we have a target on our back, but we’re not looking ahead,” Davis said. “I think we were sloppy in the beginning of the third set today, so (Friday) we will try to come out and start off strong every single set.”
The Redstickers (43-2) advance to Friday’s semifinal to play St. Amantat 1:40 p.m.
“All season long, these girls focus and work hard on the ultimate goal and that is to try to win a state championship,” said St. Joseph’s coach Sivi Miller, going for her fourth title.
Kelly McDuff had 13 assists and Melanie Miller had 23 digs. Katherine Young had 12 kills.
Mallory Krudsen’s 17 assists led the Chipmunks.
St. Amant 3, Fontainbleau 0: St. Amant’s Alli Duplechein had 13 kills and five blocks as St. Amant swept all three sets to advance to the semfinals. St. Amant advances to Friday’s 1:40 p.m. semifinals to play top-seeded St. Joseph. Christine Kugelmann han nine kills for the Bulldogs.
Mount Carmel 3, Dominican 0: Kate. Kampen had 21 kills to lead Mount Carmel to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-22 victory in the Division I quarterfinals.
Mount Carmel (45-2) advances to Friday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal to face Barbe.
Kristen Nuss had nine kills and 17 digs. Jillian Clark had 40 assists for the Cubs.
Kellie Kampen had 15 digs.
Dominican (27-16) was led by Sarah Bordelon, who had 17 assists. Laura Lorio and Hannah McGowan had eight kills each.
Barbe 3, Comeaux 0: Peyton Montgomery had 11 kills and Julia Papania had 28 assists to lead Barbe (38-5) past rival Comeaux.
