Top-ranked Mandeville advanced to the girls Top 28 state tournament with a double overtime, 48-42 victory over New Iberia Thursday night in the Skippers gym.
With the win, Mandeville (30-1) advances to the state semifinals and will take on Denham Springs.
“Give credit to New Iberia,” Mandeville coach Melissa Weinmunson said. “They stopped us from getting into anything tonight really offensively. But in the end this team did what they had to do and again relied on their defense to win yet again.
“I continue to be amazed by this team and the heart they play with.”
Elise Reilly finished with 22 points to lead the Skippers. Shantel Short finished with nine and Jannah Boudreaux finished with eight.
Down 41-38 with less than 10 seconds to go in the first overtime, Morgan Carrier hit a 3-pointer for the Yellow Jackets (17-15) to send it to a second overtime.
Reilly scored six of the seven points for Mandeville in the double overtime period to take control of the game and send her squad to the state semifinals.
“I’m shaking right now,” Reilly said. “What an amazing game. I just had to try and shut out the distractions and do whatever this team needed me to do to help us win. That is all we were worried about.
“We could have given up when it went to the second overtime, but we didn’t. We stayed focused and fought until the very end. It just took two more periods to do it.”
Bailey Antoine finished the game with 14 points to lead New Iberia.
“Just too many turnovers in too many bad spots,” New Iberia coach Jeremy Bonin said. “We had our fair share of chances to get this thing done. We just couldn’t do it.”
