Hunter Dale made a defensive gem in the bottom of the sixth, then scored the game-winning run in the seventh to help John Curtis end its second-round playoff jinx.

Curtis, which lost in the regional round the past three seasons, defeated host Notre Dame 4-3 Tuesday in the Class 3A playoffs.

“We finally got that second round behind us, and now hopefully we can make a run,” Patriots coach Johnny Curtis said.

Curtis lost in the second round to Holy Savior Menard in 2011 and 2012 and fell to Kinder in the second round last season.

With the game tied 3-3, Dale, the Patriots left fielder, caught a fly ball and threw a Notre Dame runner out at the plate.

He then hit a double in the seventh inning and moved to third on a bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Curtis (29-6) advances to the quarterfinals and will host the winner of Wednesday’s game between Iowa and Parkview Baptist.

“We know that whoever we get in the next round will be really good,” Curtis said.

Dylan Robinson went 2-for-2 for Curtis, which had eight hits.

Evan Hileman pitched 5.1 innings, and Collin Perez finished the game for the Patriots.

St. Charles 14, South Beauregard 4: St. Charles cruised to an easy win in the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Comets have outscored their two playoff opponents 21-4 after beating Thomas Jefferson 7-0 in the bidistrict round.

St. Charles, a No. 10 seed, will play the winner of Wednesday’s game between St. Louis and Evangel Christian in the quarterfinals.
