Tara Athletic Director Barry Jackson wanted to come up with a suitable way to honor the school’s longtime basketball coach Larry Grantham, who died last spring.

“We kicked it around for while and talked about it,” Jackson said. “The thing was, we wanted something that was not only appropriate, but also would continue to honor Larry from now on.

“Naming the jamboree after Larry is perfect. It’s something that will continue every year, and it’ll help start each year for us.”

The Larry Grantham Boys Basketball Jamboree set for Thursday at Tara helps highlight two days of jamboree action that begin Wednesday with girls jamborees at St. Joseph’s Academy and Capitol, along with a boys jamboree at Zachary.

There will be three games each at Capitol’s Ladies Night Jamboree and the SJA Jamboree. Glen Oaks, Christian Life, Broadmoor and host Friendship Capitol will compete starting at 5 p.m.

Games start at 5:30 p.m. at SJA with six teams competeing: 5A Denham Springs, 4A St. Michael, 3A Parkview Baptist and 2A Episcopal. Zachary hosts Catholic at 5 p.m. with freshman, junior varsity and varsity games planned.

Tara’s Grantham Jamboree and the McKinley Jamboree are the biggest boys jamborees Thursday. Walker, Plaquemine, Livonia, St. Amant, West Feliciana, LSD, French Settlement and Port Allen also host Thursday jamborees.

The McKinley Jamboree features six games and starts at 5 p.m. Two teams that won state titles last spring, Class 2A Madison Prep and 3A University High, are part of the McKinley Jamboree.

Another defending state champion, 5A Scotlandville, helps headline the Grantham Jamboree, along with 4A St. Michael, a semifinalist last year.

A banner honoring Grantham will be unveiled before the 7:50 p.m. game between Tara and Central.
