University High goalkeeper Elizabeth Bankhead and Baton Rouge High wing/defender Natalie Presedo made the 1998 girls pool team at the regional Olympic Development Program camp held in Montevallo, Ala.

The pool squad was selected from a group of players from 11 states. A Shreveport area player, Parkway’s Sara Funderburk, also made the pool team.

Longtime Catholic High baseball coach Gerry Garidel is set to be Zachary High’s pitching coach next spring, said ZHS head coach Jesse Cassard.

It will be Garidel’s first baseball coaching stint since leaving Catholic High. He won 541 and 14 district titles through the 2007 season, leading the Bears to the playoffs in 25 of his 28 seasons as head coach.

Garidel has been an assistant football coach at Zachary since 2009-10.

Ex-major leaguers David Delluci and Kurt Ainsworth were among the players Garidel coached at Catholic.

Alumni tickets available

Tickets can still be purchased for the induction of Glen “Big Baby” Davis and John Hamilton into the University High Athletic Hall of Fame set for 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the LSU Union Cotillion Ballroom.

Davis, who graduated in 2004, led the Cubs to two state titles before going on to star at LSU and in the NBA. He won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics and played with the Orlando Magic before playing for the Los Angeles Clippers last season.

Hamilton graduated in 1981 and was a basketball standout, along with being the school’s first African American quarterback and all-state basketball player. He played basketball at Nicholls State and is now a sports agent who has represented a number of former LSU and U-High standouts, including g Davis.

Plaquemine kickoff meeting

All Plaquemine High athletes set to compete in football, swimming, cross country, volleyball, dance and cheerleading are invited to the school’s Meet the Players/Open House set for 6 p.m. Aug. 6.

Live Oak title sponsor

Mears Sand & Gravel is now the title sponsor of Live Oak High School athletics based on agreement finalized late in the spring.

The first major event for the new sponsor will be the Mears Sand & Gravel Varsity Jamboree for football on Aug. 29 at the Livingston Parish-based school.

Each game features two 12-minute halves. Brusly takes on False River in the first game at 6 p.m., followed by Live Oak vs. Fontainebleau.

Softball umpires meeting

Incoming assignment secretary Ray Johnson is hosting a meet and greet for all members of Baton Rouge’s Louisiana High School Officials Association for softball at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at the new East Baton Rouge library located on Old Hammond Highway near Flannery.
