Parkview Baptist advanced to the semifinals, leading the local contingent at Woodlawn High’s Rumble in the Jungle volleyball tournament completed Saturday night at WHS.
The Eagles finished 3-0 in pool play, beating eventual tourney runner-up Fontainebleau along the way. PBS then went on to beat St. John 2-1 in the quarterfinals before losing 2-1 to eventual tourney champion Newman in the semifinals.
Newman won that semifinal by set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 15-7 before beating Fontainebleau 2-1 in the final, winning that one by set scores of 8-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Newman’s Katherine Bolyard was the tournament MVP. PBS’ Cameron Forbes also was part of the all-tourney team.
After losing its first game on Saturday, Silliman Institute stayed alive by notching two wins at the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class 2A softball tournament.
Silliman’s title quest continues with a 9 a.m. Monday elimination game against Tri-County Academy in Brandon, Miss.
The Wildcats lost 1-0 to Leake Academy to open the tourney Saturday. Coach Trae Weaver’s team then beat Central Hinds 7-6 an and defending tournament champion Bayou Academy 8-4 to advance.
