LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — In a rematch of the 5A championship game from a year ago, Scotlandville defeated Natchitoches Central, 42-34 in the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 5A State Championship game Friday night in Lake Charles.
Scotlandville (30-4) was led by Most Outstanding Player Ja’Vonte Smart, who finished the game with 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Jordan Adebutu also added 11 points in the win.
The story of the game was the final five minutes of the final period. Trailing 32-31 with 5:17 left in the game, Scotlandville ended the game on an 11-2 run to grab the lead and take home the state championship. Defensively, the Hornets held Natchitoches Central without a field goal for the final 5:17 of the game. The Chiefs lone points of the run would come on a pair of free throws by Danny Cohen with 26.5 second left in the game.
A battle between the last three state champions in the state’s highest classification, a back-and-forth first half saw neither team gain more than a three-point lead until the final two minutes of the first half. Trailing 18-15, Natchitoches Central ended the first half on a 7-0 run and Marquis King’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Chiefs a 22-18 lead headed into the locker room.
Natchitoches Central was led by Austin Guy, who finished with 10 points. Cohen finished with eight points and four rebounds.
