SULPHUR — Isidore Newman’s Jared Williams helped lead the list of top qualifiers on the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Swim meet.
Williams posted the top times in two events, the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke, during Wednesday’s Division IV preliminary heats that helped open the annual four-day meet at the SPAR Aquatic Center.
Finals for Division IV begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by finals for Division III at 3 p.m.
Williams recorded the top time of 50.10 seconds in his 100 butterfly heat, finishing eight seconds faster than the next closest competitor. A year ago, Williams set a Division IV record by swimming an identical 50.10 in the finals.
There will be a little extra motivation on Thursday. Williams’ time was a half a second off the state composite record of 49.63 set by Jesuit’s John Tortorich in 2007. Later on Wednesday, Williams posted a time of 59.60 in the 100 breaststroke, again eight seconds faster than the next closest finisher.
Michael Foley of Northlake Christian had the top mark of 1 minute, 55.64 seconds in the 200 freestyle. Hannan’s Holly Rodgers and Newman’s 200 freestyle relay provided Division IV girls highlights.
Rodgers had the top mark in of 1:04.98 in the 100 butterfly. Newman’s 200 free relay finished 1:50.76.
Lusher Charter and E.D. White Catholic had multiple top qualifiers in the Division III boys competition.
EDW’s Nicola Rathle and Jay Danos each recorded two top qualifying times. Danos posted the top time of 22.38 seconds in the 50 freestyle, just ahead of Lutcher’s Luke Zeringue (22.41). He came back a short time later to lead all 100 butterfly competitors in 53.78.
Rathle led all qualifiers in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.97 seconds, after recording a 2:08.58 in the 200 individual medley. Lusher’s Dean Rhodies topped the list of 100 breaststroke qualifiers in 1:04.41. E.D. White had the top times in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, while Lusher was the top 400 freestyle relay qualifier.
Jessica Ding of Haynes Academy was the top Division III girls qualifier in the 100 freestyle in 54.71 seconds.
There were several other competitors with multiple top times in both divisions. Episcopal’s Chanler Turnley (100 freestyle, 200 IM) and The Dunham School’s Olivia Huffman (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) in the Division IV girls heats.
Notre Dame’s Erin Trahan (100 butterfly, 50 freestyle) and University’s Johannah Cangelosi (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) had two top marks in the Division III girls prelims.
The Lusher boys were the top finisher in the 200 freestyle relay in Division III in 1:35.72. E.D. White had the other two top relay times.
