Last week: Ascension Christian lost to St. John 57-12; Ecole Classique lost to Ben Franklin, 46-5

The buzz: Nondistrict game. Ascension Christian of District 6-1A has lost two in a row by a combined score of 105-12. Ecole has lost all three games against varsity opponents, allowing at least 40 points in all three losses.

Belle Chasse (5-3, 1-2) at Karr (3-3, 3-0) (Behrman)

Last week: Belle Chasse lost to Shaw 49-34; Karr beat 48-22

Last season: Karr won 27-14

The buzz: District 9-4A game. After opening the season 3-0, Belle Chasse has dropped three of its past four games. Conversely, Karr started the season 0-3 but has won three consecutive district games. The Cougars have scored at least 41 points in their past four games.

Clark (2-5, 1-3) vs. McMain (1-6, 1-2)

Last week: Clark lost to De La Salle 49-0; McMain beat KIPP 57-8

Last season: McMain won 38-0

The buzz: District 9-3A game. Clark has dropped two in a row and allowed 49 points in each of those games. McMain snapped its seven-game losing streak with a 57-8 win over KIPP. The Mustangs scored 57 points in that win after totaling 88 points through the first six games.

Country Day (7-0, 2-0) at Newman (4-2, 0-2)

Last week: Country Day beat Sophie B. Wright 56-6; Newman lost to St. Charles, 45-9

Last season: Did not play

The buzz: District 9-2A game. Country Day and Newman are ranked fourth and sixth among small schools by The New Orleans Advocate. Country Day has opened the season 7-0 for the first time since 2004. The Cajuns are averaging 55.9 points per game and have scored at least 40 points each week. Quietly, their defense has held opponents to 8.6 points per game. Newman has lost two games to open district play. The Greenies haven’t dropped two league games in a season since 2012. QB Miles Lapeyre and WR Elbert Thomas lead the Newman offense.

Covenant Chrstan (3-4, 2-0) at St. Martin’s (2-5, 2-1)

Last week: Covenant Christian beat Varnado, 27-14; St. Martin’s beat Crescent City 41-6

Last season: Covenant Christian won 49-19

The buzz: District 8-1A game. After a 1-4 start, Covenant Christian has won two games in a row to open district play. The Lions have won three straight meetings against St. Martin’s. The Saints have scored at least 41 points in two of their past three games.

Covington (3-4, 1-3) at Northshore (2-5, 1-3)

Last week: Covington lost to Fontainebleau 23-22; Northshore beat Hammond 38-0

Last season: Covington won 45-7

The buzz: District 6-5A game. Covington has lost two in a row in district play for the first time since Weeks 9 and 10 of the 2010 season. The Lions have won the last six games in the series. Northshore’s 38-0 shutout of Hammond was the team’s first shutout since Sept. 13, 2013 against Chalmette, which also was a 38-0 win.

Curtis (5-1, 2-1) vs. Holy Cross (4-3, 2-2)

The buzz: District 9-5A game. This is the first meeting between these two New Orleans area schools in 25 years. They last played in 1989 and 1990, with Curtis winning both. Curtis is ranked fourth in Class 5A by the LSWA and fourth among large schools by The New Orleans Advocate. Last week, Holy Cross freshman quarterback Chandler Fields eclipsed 1,000 yards passing and has upped his touchdown total to 12.

Destrehan (7-0, 4-0) at H.L Bourgeois (5-2, 1-2)

Last week: Destrehan beat Central Lafourche 31-7; H.L. Bourgeois lost to Thibodaux 49-25

Last season: Destrehan won 44-20

The buzz: District 7-5A game. Destrehan is ranked third in Class 5A by the LSWA and second among large schools by The New Orleans Advocate. The Wildcats are 7-0 for the third consecutive season. H.L. Bourgeois has dropped two consecutive meetings in the series.

East Jefferson (2-5, 1-3) at West Jefferson (3-4, 2-2)

The buzz: District 8-5A game. East Jeff’s win over Cox snapped a five-game losing skid. The Warriors matched their season-high with 27 points in the win, their most since their season opener against Salmen. West Jefferson is riding a two-game losing skid in which the Bucs produced a season-low eight points a week ago against Ehret.

Ehret (5-2, 3-1) at Chalmette (5-2, 4-0)

Last week: Ehret beat West Jefferson, 39-8; Chalmette beat Bonnabel, 37-14

Last season: Ehret won 13-10

The buzz: District 8-5A game. Chalmette is ranked ninth among large schools by The New Orleans Advocate. The Owls sit atop District 8-5A and would be on track to clinch a district tile by defeating Ehret. Ehret linebacker Robert Green, an Army commitment, is six sacks shy of tying the school record for sacks in a season.

Fisher (4-3, 1-1) at S. Plaquemines (3-4, 1-0)

Last week: Fisher beat Cohen 35-6; South Plaquemines lost to Erath 44-30

Last season: South Plaquemines won 53-0

The buzz: District 8-2A game. Last week, Fisher earned its first district win under first-year coach and alumnus Aaron Caulfield. Previously, Fisher had lost four district games dating to 2014, including a shutout to South Plaquemines at home. South Plaquemines has not played a home game since Sept. 11 against Pope John Paul II. The Hurricanes are 1-1 at home this season.

Hahnville (4-3, 2-1) at Central Lafourche (4-3, 1-2)

Last week: Hahnville beat East St. John 49-15; Cent. Lafour. lost to Destrehan, 31-7

Last season: Hahnville won 38-13

The buzz: District 6-5A game. Hahnville has rebounded from a three-game losing skid to win back-to-back district games by a combined score of 90-25. Do-it-all back Anthony “Pooka” Williams rushed for 128 yards, had 74 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns, one on a punt return against East St. John last week. Central Lafourche has dropped two in a row.

Hannan (4-3, 2-2) at Springfield (1-6, 0-4)

Last week: Hannan lost to Northlake Christian 27-19; Springfield lost to Pine 27-20

Last season: Springfield won 41-6

The buzz: District 7-2A game. Hannan and Springfield have split the series over the past two years. Hannan has yet to lose back-to-back games under first-year coach Scott Wattigny. Springfield is riding a four-game losing streak in which its defense is allowing 32.5 points per game.

Haynes Academy (6-1, 2-0) at Berwick (2-5, 1-3)

Last week: Haynes beat Thomas Jefferson 18-12; Berwick lost to Kaplan 32-13

The buzz: Nondistrict game. Haynes of District 8-2A has won five consecutive games. The Yellow Jackets are ranked ninth among small schools by The New Orleans Advocate. Berwick of District 8-3A has dropped three in a row and has been outscored 127-34 in that span.

Houma Christian (3-4, 2-0) at Crescent City (1-6, 0-2)

Last week: Houma Christian beat Ridgewood, 43-28; Crescent City lost to St. Martin’s 41-6

Last season: Houma Christian defeated Crescent City, 38-18

The buzz: District 8-1A game. Houma Christian has reeled off back-to-back wins to open district play, averaging 42.5 points in those two games. Crescent City has lost three consecutive meetings against Houma Christian. The Pioneers’ last victory against the Warriors came on Sept. 30, 2011 by a score of 38-24.

Jewel Sumner (3-4, 2-0) at Salmen (1-5, 1-1)

Last week: Jewel Sumner beat Albany, 25-12; Salmen beat Pearl River, 41-3

Last season: Did not play

The buzz: Nondistrict game. Jewel Sumner of District 7-3A has won back-to-back games against Amite and Albany. Sumner lost 31-0 to another District 8-4A foe in Lakeshore earlier this month. Salmen broke a five-game losing streak last week with a win over Pearl River.

Loranger (2-5, 0-2) at Pearl River (4-3, 0-1)

Last week: Loranger lost to Franklinton 41-14; Pearl River lost to Salmen 41-3

The buzz: District 8-4A game. Loranger has dropped back-to-back games to start district. Pearl River is seeking to snap a 14-game district losing streak which dates to 2012. The Rebels’ last district victory came against Lakeshore on Oct. 12, 2012 by a score of 41-40.

Lusher (4-3, 2-2) vs. KIPP (1-6, 0-4)

Last week: Lusher beat Sci Academy 35-6; KIPP lost to McMain 57-8

The buzz: District 9-3A game. This is the first meeting between these two schools. Lusher, ranked eighth among small schools by The New Orleans Advocate, has won back-to-back games against McMain and Sci Academy. Lions led by QB Eli Poche. KIPP has yet to earn a victory against in-state competition.

Mandeville (6-1, 4-0) at Hammond (0-7, 0-4)

Last week: Mandeville beat Slidell 38-0; Hammond lost to Northshore 38-0

Last season: Mandeville won 45-3

The buzz: District 6-5A game. Mandeville is ranked seventh among large schools by The New Orleans Advocate. The Skippers have won their past 10 meetings against Hammond. Hammond last defeated Mandeville in October 2004 by a score of 29-6.

McDonogh 35 (6-1, 3-1) vs. Riverdale (1-6, 0-4)

Last week: McDonogh 35 lost to Warren Easton 31-7; Riverdale lost to Lake Area, 21-14

The buzz: District 9-4A game. McDonogh 35 is ranked seventh in Class 4A by the LSWA and eighth among large schools by The New Orleans Advocate. Sci Martin and Stephon Taylor lead the Roneagles defense. Riverdale has lost four consecutive games and has been outscored 181-26 in that span.

The Wolverines have won three in a row, outscoring their opponents 91-22. St. Thomas Aquinas is 7-0 and has posted shutouts the past two weeks.

Ponchatoula (5-2, 2-2) at Fontainebleau (5-2, 3-1)

Last week: Ponchatoula lost to St. Paul’s 41-38; Fontainebleau beat Covington, 23-22

The buzz: District 6-5A game. Ponchatoula has defeated Fontainebleau in three consecutive meetings. Fontainebleau last defeated the Green Wave on Sept. 30, 2011 by a score of 3-0. Ponchatoula hasn’t lost back-to-back games since the 2011 season. The Bulldogs have won three in a row, their longest win streak since they won six straight to open 2011.

Pope John Paul II (1-6, 0-2) at St. Helena (4-3, 2-1)

Last week: Pope John Paul II lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 41-0; St. Helena lost to Kentwood, 40-6

Last season: St. Helena won 27-6

The buzz: District 7-2A game. Pope John Paul II is riding a three-game losing streak in which the Jaguars have been outscored 138-3, including shutouts at the hands of Country Day and St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Helena is averaging 28.9 points per game and has scored at least 28 points in its four wins.

Riverside (5-1, 2-0) at St. Charles (6-1, 2-0)

Last week: Riverside beat West St. John 44-6; St. Charles beat Newman, 45-9

The buzz: District 9-2A game. Riverside and St. Charles rank fourth and seventh in Class 2A by the LSWA, and first and second among small schools by The New Orleans Advocate. This is the first regular-season meeting since Oct. 15, 2010, when St. Charles won 35-21.

Sci Academy (1-6, 1-3) at Lutcher (6-1, 4-0)

The buzz: District 9-3A game. Sci Academy has dropped three consecutive games and has been outscored 110-17 by Clark, St. James and Lusher. Lutcher is ranked third in Class 3A by the LSWA. Bulldogs quarterback Jontre Kirklin was sidelined part of last week’s game against St. James with cramps but finished the game.

Sophie B. Wright (1-5, 0-2) at West St. John (2-5, 0-2)

Last week: Wright lost to Country Day 56-6; West St. John lost to Riverside 44-6

The buzz: District 9-2A game. This is the first meeting between Wright and West St. John. Wright has dropped five consecutive games and has been outscored 203-28 in that span. West St. John, which previously competed in Class 1A, had not dropped a district game since 2010 before this season.

The buzz: Nondistrict game. St. Aug has dropped back-to-back games against Shaw and Curtis by a combined 10 points. St. Aug and Thibodaux last squared off Nov. 4, 2010 as the Purple Knights won, 61-21. After an 0-2 start, Thibodaux has won five consecutive games averaging 43.8 points per game.

St. Paul’s (6-1, 4-0) at Slidell (1-6, 1-3)

Last week, St. Paul’s preserved a perfect district record with a double-overtime triumph over Ponachtoula. Slidell has lost three in a row and been shutout twice in the past two weeks.

Terrebonne (2-5, 0-3) at East St. John (0-7, 0-4)

Last week: Terrebonne lost to Lakeshore 31-13; East St. John lost to Hahnville 49-15

The buzz: District 7-5A game. After a 2-0 start, Terrebonne has dropped five games in a row. East St. John has won its past two meetings against Terrebonne. The Wildcats remain in search of their first victory under coach Alden Foster.
