Neither host John Curtis or Dominican could pull away in the first four sets Wednesday, however, the Patriots did in the fifth as they won 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11.
After a kill by Layne Estes, Curtis led 11-8 and extended that lead to 12-8 on Carsyn Wallow’s kill. The Patriots (29-6) won by scoring the last three points.
“Basically, I think between the two teams was a serve-reception game,” said Curtis coach Dawn Curtis. “I think both teams’ serve-reception was on and off, and that was a factor.
“When we would pass, we would actually be able to run our offense. I thought our serving was tough.”
Leading John Curtis was Tatiana Bell, who had 18 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Drake had 19 digs and Reaghan Fabacher had 23 assists.
Laura Lorio led Dominican (25-15) with 16 kills and four aces. Abby Buchert also had 16 kills. Marli Baquet had 19 digs.
“We had a great match overall,” Dominican coach Jessica Chatellier said. “In Game 5, we came out a little slow. They scored a bunch of points on us in the beginning. We fought back hard.”
Chatellier said her team was unable to find new ways to generate offense in the fifth game.
Dominican entered Wednesday’s match second in The New Orleans Advocate’s large school poll. John Curtis is fourth in the small school rankings.
Neither team could pull away in the first set.
After a 3-3 tie, Bell had a kill that gave her team a lead. She did that again when both teams were tied at 4.
A Drake hit gave her team a 10-7 lead, and that was later followed by Dominican’s Hannah McGowan, who had a kill that cut the lead to 11-9.
McGowan delivered another hit to cut the Curtis advantage to 12-11.
A hit by Buchert cut the Curtis lead to 18-17 and after another hit by Bell, the Patriots were up by two.
Curtis took a 21-17 lead after a block by Drake and Estes.
In the second set, Dominican had an 18-17 lead, holding off the Patriots after two ties.
With Curtis down 17-13 in the third set, a kill by Bell started a 5-0 run that gave her team an 18-17 lead.
Dominican tied the score at 18 on a kill by Buchert, then Bell started a 3-0 run to give the Patriots a 21-18 lead.
Curtis will play in a tournament at Episcopal of Acadiana that starts Thursday. Dominican finishes with home matches against Higgins on Thursday and University High on Saturday.
