Kendall Bussey rushed for 188 rushing yards on just 13 caries and scored four touchdowns to lead Newman to a 47-14 victory over Sophie B. Wright on Friday night in the District 8-2A opener.

“I thought we came out and played well, especially offensively,” Newman coach Nelson Stewart said. “I thought our tempo was really good and our offensive line played well.”

Bussey, a Nebraska commitment has rushed 50 times for 535 yards this season, averaging 10.7 yards per carry and has scored 14 rushing touchdowns.

Newman quarterback Miles Lapeyre completed 10 of 10 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns (two to Jay Tyler and another to Elbert Thomas).

The Greenies (4-0), ranked No. 2 in The New Orleans Advocate Small School Super 10, are averaging 49.3 points per game.

Newman plays Carver at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Pan Am Stadium.

“Carver is really athletic so we will have to play well,” Stewart said.”

Landry-Walker 40, West Jefferson 24: Li’Jon Cordier threw three touchdown passes to lead the Charging Buccaneers, who rebounded from last week’s triple overtime loss to Hahnville.

The Charging Buccaneers (3-1), ranked No. 5 in The New Orleans Advocate Large School Super 10, built a commanding 27-0 halftime lead.

Romalas Walker and Carlius Joseph, both transfers from Carver, had receiving touchdowns for Landry-Walker.

West Jefferson ( 0-4) will play Grace King on Friday, while Landry-Walker plays McKinley.
