Livonia surged into the polls for the first time ever as a Class 3A school, while defending state champions Parkview Baptist in Class 3A and White Castle in Class 1A dropped out of the rankings in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association football polls released Monday.

All five top-ranked teams from last week retained that spot this week. St. Paul’s of Covington is the top team in Class 5A, St. Thomas More leads 4A, St. Charles Catholic leads 3A, John Curtis leads 2A and Ouachita Christian was voted the best team in Class 1A.

Second-ranked Dutchtown (4-0) earned three first-place votes and 133 points to gain ground on St. Paul’s, which had nine first-place votes and 141 points. Acadiana is third and Carencro fifth in 5A.

Livonia (4-0) is ranked ninth. Other area teams in the 3A poll are third-ranked Amite (3-1), fourth-ranked Independence (3-1) and seventh-ranked East Feliciana (2-2). Parkview (1-3) finished just outside the Top 10 with 30 points.

“It’s good for our program to be ranked,” Livonia coach David Brewerton said. “Things have been going well for us on the field.”

A member of District 5-3A, Livonia has outscored its four foes 175-42. Along the way, Livonia beat a Class 5A team (Live Oak 27-6) and St. John of Plaquemine (52-28) for the first time in school history.

“We’re no longer flying under radar,” Brewerton said. “We know we’ll have a target on our back. We spent a lot of time in the weight room in the offseason and concentrated on being a more physical football team.”

University High (4-0) maintained its third-place ranking in 2A. Episcopal (4-0) moved up a spot to seventh. The two teams meet Oct. 6 at EHS.

Both coaches said their teams can’t afford to look ahead to the game against their biggest rival. University entertains 5A Live Oak, while Episcopal hosts Many (4-0), which received 18 votes in the 2A poll and has outscored its foes 158-62. That includes a 67-18 win over Class 1A Logansport last week.

“We showed the guys the film of Many, and if they want to look ahead, they’ll find themselves with a loss,” Episcopal coach Travis Bourgeois said. “Many has good speed and is tough to defend with a spread offense.”

“We better be ready to play a physical game against Live Oak,” University coach Chad Mahaffey said. “I’ve been pleased with our defense. Our guys practice hard, and so far we’ve kept it rolling along in games.”

University has outscored its four foes 175-32. Mahaffey said defensive ends Tim Williams and Hayes Stewart have led the charge on defense, while quarterback Kyle Crifasi has stepped up on offense.

“We’ve got to respond to the challenges that a ranked team gets,” Bourgeois said. “The recognition is good, but other teams use that as motivation. We can’t come out flat against anybody.”

Lutcher (3-1) is again ranked fourth in Class 4A.

“We had our best game so far last week when we started district play,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said. “We had a turnover-free game and that was great.”

Lutcher beat Tara 56-24 last week and entertains Broadmoor (3-1) this week.

Scotlandville (4-0) received six points in the Class 5A poll. St. Michael the Archangel and Broadmoor earned 17 and three points, respectively, in Class 4A. Port Allen and Brusly earned three and one points, respectively, in Class 3A. White Castle (17), East Iberville (12) and St. John (3) earned recognition in Class 1A.
