CHALMETTE - Turnabout was indeed fair play for Gauthier & Amedee on Wednesday and Thursday night.

The Gonzales-based team avenged a loss in the regional title game on July 13 by ousting Retif Oil in back-to-back games to claim its second consecutive American Legion State Tournament title.

After Jesse Burratt tossed a complete game in a 7-1 win over New Orleans-based Retif on Wednesday night, Chris Boutwell scattered three hits in a 5-3 victory on Thursday. Both games were played at Chalmette High.

“Last year was great, but in a lot of ways, this year was even more rewarding,” Gauthier & Amedee coach Justin Morgan said. “Some great things were expected last year and those guys lived up to what they were supposed to do.

“This year we were definitely the underdogs. Retif had their entire lineup intact from the team that won the Class 5A (high school) state championship last spring.

“We really beat the odds, and I couldn’t be prouder of a group of kids.”

With the win, G&A advanced to the American Legion Mid-South Regional set to begin Thursday in Minden. Gauthier will face the Kansas state champion in its first-round game.

Gauthier & Amedee (26-9) won all five of its games in the rain-altered state tourney that began last weekend.

Games were moved from Kirsch-Rooney Stadium to Tulane on Tuesday. From there, games were moved to an artificial turf field at Chalmette High.

Former Dutchtown High player Boutwell attended Baton Rouge Community College as a player last year but did not play baseball because of an arm injury. Boutwell continued his comeback with Thursday’s three-hitter.

G&A finished with eight hits and garnered a big advantage by taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Gonzales team added single runs in the third and fourth innings.

BRCC’s Burratt, another former DHS player. finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. St. Amant High senior-to-be Tyler Guillory was 2-for-3. Recent Dutchtown graduate Matt Willis added a double and an RBI.

John Lee, finished 2-for-4 with a double, paced Retif.
